Police are seeking information after the Russian flag was stolen from the International Flag Display on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin in late January.
The National Capital Authority (NCA), which manages the display of 110 flags, reported the missing flag to ACT Policing after it was discovered – “removed without authorisation” – on the Australia Day long weekend.
The NCA replaced the flag the following week, but in a statement, ACT Policing said it is appealing to “anyone with any information about the theft”.
“ACT Policing is aware of the theft of a flag from the International Flag Display at Commonwealth Place, Parkes,” the spokesperson said.
The International Flag Display at Commonwealth Place includes 110 flags for the 108 missions with a diplomatic presence in Canberra, as well as flags for the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN).
All the national flags are arranged alphabetically, starting closest to the High Court of Australia with Afghanistan and ending with Zimbabwe.
The flags are flown 24 hours a day, lit at night, and each is identified by a plaque at the base of the flagpole.
Police said all these other flags are “presented and accounted for”.
