A senator in his pocket, Tio slouches into the sunset

By johnboy - 7 November 2013 9

The Canberra Times is keeping up with local Liberal machinations as Party President Tio Faulkner hands over the reins to Peter Collins.

Mr Faulkner had nominated for re-election but announced at the party’s annual meeting on Wednesday night that he would not recontest. He told meeting it was ”the right time to step aside”.

”It’s been a fantastic journey, from two small offices in the suburbs to a professional operation that can take it right up to the Labor Party,” he said in a statement.

So they’ve snagged a swisher office and still can’t win an election? Bravo.

Pity about the paperwork.

What’s Your opinion?

I suppose there is no connection between this dude’s departure and the further news about the mess their finances are in? If the Libs can’t run a party branch, can they run a Territory or a country?

Actually, this move to the right makes perfect sense if you assume that (a) the right of the party has given up hope, and therefore its responsibility, to represent the community that is right of centre, and (b) they are so obsessed about power that they’re prepared to sacrifice ACT office for a potential seat in the federal tent.

Or more precisely, f&#^ the ACT, Zed wants power.

I suspect the 2016 (territory) election will not be a good one for the local Liberals, it is highly likely we will see a messy Ballot paper not to dis simular to the recent ACT Senate ticket. I notice the Sex party is already filling in the paper work to run locally, surly Palmer will follow and it seems Steven Bailey from the Katter Party has set up on Facebook and already campaigning. With so many choices in a Haire Clarke election it is likely some votes will get exhausted with people only numbering to the maximum in the seat.

But the major problem for the Libs is they will be put up against more moderate right of centre parties, which will bleed their vote. Unless they change the pre selection process and allow a few moderates in the mix I cant see them holding 8 seats.

Yes, it’s true, the Sex Party will be running candidates in the 2016 election. If you would like to be part of the fun the Party is offering free membership to Canberra residents for a limited time. Feel free to email me (deborah@pleasurebox.com.au) if you’d like me to email you the application form or go to http://www.sexparty.org.au

Great night all round. The entire Seselja/Coe ticket smashed it in with almost exactly the same vote on each candidate. I’d call them ‘Faceless Men’ but really, it’s Coe, Seselja and Faulkner. The hard-right are now completely in control of the entire Party with no positions held by moderates.

Collins was ‘given’ the President’s role, Faulkner stood and took all the flak during reports, paving the way for a clear run for Collins. Faulkner will be treated with a role in Seselja’s staff on the hill.

This is who you will be voting for in 2016, folks. Every candidate will be from the hard-Right of the party, expect abortions and contraception to be banned shortly thereafter. Gays will be shot on sight.

Enjoy.

By 2016 public service job losses will be a reality for some people rather than a possibility, and there’s still that commission of audit to come. I would have thought it was self evident to the Libs that to win government in 2016 they need to do more to appeal to moderate Labor voters rather than trying to drive away moderate Liberal voters.

A great record of achievement. Moving Zed to Brindabella, turning Tuggeranong/south Woden into a Lib stronghold and coming to within a seat of winning ACT government then throwing that all away by dumping the popular Gary Humphries as senator, almost losing the Senate seat and turning Tuggeranong/south Woden back into a Labor/Greens stronghold to such an extent that Deakin was the only booth in the ACT in the recent federal election where the majority voted Liberal.

Take a bow, Tio.
