Actew's Revenue Raising

I heard some interesting news over the weekend from an employee of ACTEW. Apparently due to the revenue drop caused by the water restrictions, ACTEW have been selling off water to increase there income. According to them, our water problems wouldn’t be as bad (ie our water restrictions) if ACTEW actually stopped selling off water and started saving it the way they’re telling us to. Has anyone else heard this?

i will ask him to send me a copy of an invoice or something similar. I know you can purchase a tank full of water to fill in your swimming pool and they get the water from ACTEW.

perhaps dams was the wrong word. maybe the pipes, filtration etc that is needed to provide water to all houses would suffice. Not too mnetion all the shiny leased vehicles that seem to clag up the pub carparks and TABs at lunchtime…

According to the Annual Report, the Water Abstraction Charge was increased from 25c to 55c/kL between the 05/06 and 06/07 financial years.

Get your mate to anonymously leak you a document that proves these claims.

“Mr Stanhope says ACTEW’s major investment in infrastructure is being passed onto customers.”
ACTJEW’s customers will have to pay for the new dams that your water comes out of?

that hasn’t started yet! Over the past 3 years, we’ve had water restrictions, yet the income is still the same. Like I said, i heard it from an employee of ACTEW. He was pretty pissed off about it.

off course their revenue will be at 1.8%! Since they are getting less money from people due to water restriction, they’re selling water to bring it up to the 1.8%!!!!! How else can they explain that people are using less water, but they’re still bringing in the same money!

…that reminds me, I should go turn off the lawn sprinklers. I forgot they were broken and pointed at the concrete.

Up in Brisneyland, we were on Level 6 restrictions, no watering anything, 4 minute showers (unenforcable really) right of entry for inspectors if your household is deemed to use excessive quantities of water etc.

@Kisten: Thanks for clarifying and letting us know. Appreciate the info. 🙂

@Mr_Evil: I think Kirsten’s just a messenger, lets not shoot her for voicing ACTEW policy.

Dob in your neighbour, so they can fine him back to the stone age for wasting precious water.

I don’t think we have anything to worry about now there are electronic dot matrix signs on the case.

“Our dams are still at low levels despite the recent rain, which is why ACTEW encourages everyone to minimise their water use and help to conserve the water that remains.”

So, of course you now let everyone water their lawns and gardens for three hours every weekend!

Not that my neighbour gives a damn anyway: he still waters his whole yard whenever he wants, and uses his hose to wash down his concrete after he’s mown his lawn!

Thanks Kirsten, I feel much better now.

The claim that ACTEW is selling the ACT’s water supply to increase income is untrue.

ACTEW’s revenue is capped by the Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission. Typical of many water utilities, ACTEW makes only a 1.8% profit on its water assets, which is less than if the money was invested in a bank.

Our dams are still at low levels despite the recent rain, which is why ACTEW encourages everyone to minimise their water use and help to conserve the water that remains.

Yep. Everyone knows that there’s NO WATER OMFG WTF BBQ!!!1!1!!!

I bet they’re hiding the water under the old Belconnen Naval Station!

I reckon this should be filed under the “Conspiracy Theories” category. As I understand it, the necessary legal instruments aren’t in place for the ACT to buy and sell irrigation allocations (it’s one of the things that would have to be changed if we wanted to buy water from Tantangara).

The revenue would show up in the annual report anyway, check there.
