It may come as a surprise to some, but every so often Johnboy still keeps an eye on the going’s on in canberra from his beachside retreat. This time he’s noted this Attorney General’s media release covering details about the governments promise to bolster AFP numbers to the tune of 500 officers over the next 5 years.

I’m sure that AG Robert McClelland’s statement “the AFP is recognised throughout the world as a highly professional well-trained and modern police service. The measures announced today will allow the organisation to build on its well-deserved reputation.” might raise a few eyebrows amongst some RiotACT readers but i think that nobody could deny that more officers is a good thing.

Special G : Yes

Wait a minute, is this thread about cops eating donuts or getting more donut eating cops?

In the name of forum sport… it has been fun.

I’m spewing the ACT wont be getting any extra staff, they sure need them from what I hear.

Relax, please. That was just sport to me.

The extra 500 won’t mean anything in the ACT, as ACT Policing is funded under a separate contractual arrangement. But thanks for the advice

All the cops I know eat donuts, are super fit and inside the healthy weight range. No judgement or offence intended.

And yes vg you win… you know more police officers than me. I hope the extra 500 officers helps you relax a bit and understand how “taking the piss” works.

I bet you could indulge in a donut too often as you want, so long as calories in < calories out.

With teh obesity epidemic gripping the world, I think police eating donuts is the least of anyones worries….

Hell I eat a block of chocolate over a week, who cares, I also run 5km 4 to 5 times a week as well, add to that resistance and core body training… I enjoy my junk food guilt free….who are you to judge someone on what they eat when you cn not even see the big picture…anyway…. more cops eh, no matter where they end up, its a good thing.

Yeah………I bet you do. I have several hundred

I have been one for nearly 20 years, I guess I beat you.

It was a poor joke (not taken in bad taste, just poor as in shithouse) which really shows you are a little too influenced by American stereotypes.

Lighten up? Oh please, some people just aren’t smart enough to know when they’ve had the piss taken right back at them

I have several Australian police officer friends that enjoy donuts on a regular basis, especially when working night shifts. I am sure they would have taken my comment as the joke it was intended to be. Lighten up !

If its winter time then me.

Then again that is an English stereotype for fatties, funny but still English. I’ll take that over American ones any day

Whilst outwardly it may seem quite humourous it is a little bit pathetic that people stick to American stereotypes for Police in this country (the donut thing). I mean we gorge ourselves on plenty of other equally less healthy things, but for people to bring up the donut reference in this country means people watch a little too much Simpsons.

We have plenty of other stereotypes of our own here in Australia (Maccas for example) that show a little more worldly knowledge

Krispy Kreme opened in Woden….. health issues ?

They started reading Riotact and are going off in a huff.

Ant you disappoint me. You fcuken idiot.

Nothing really to add. From memory it was an election promise. I imagine they will be for the national side of things, as the ACT Govt essentially pays for all the local Police

Spoonbill,

I was wondering where you got your figure from, as it seems very high, so I checked the 06/07 report on the AFP website and this is what is has for staffing. (This includes the ACT Police)

Sworn police officers ……………………………………2,501
Protective Service Officers……………………………….1,341
Unsworn staff (Administration, technical, forensic etc)………2,194

Thats about 18% leaving every year.

The same report also states the following,

The 2006?07 combined attrition rate
for sworn and unsworn staff was 8.3 per cent, with
a significantly lower attrition rate of 4.3 per cent for
sworn staff.

I’m wondering what has changed in the last 11 months and why the sudden increase?

I’d be interested to read VG and Canberra Resident’s thoughts on this.

Current attrition is about 450 officers per annum.

Ant, you continue to surprise me. That was very amusing. Really, I’m not being sarcastic. Our senior citizens have got a funnybone, did you remember your pile medication yesterday?

These new AFPs will be issued with butterfly nets and sent out to Catch Tewowists. They’re not for mundane city policing.

Sorry folks they’re not for the streets of Canberra, only the $1billion man can put extra ACT Policing officers on our streets, but he forgot that part in the budget.

500 extra plastic police will not affect the ACT other than consumption of coffee in Civic.

The money allocated is for 500 more Police officers, and not support staff or APS security guards. Here in the ACT the Police number are controlled by the ACT city council and Lord Mayor Nohope, so we wont see and increase in Police number from this budget.

The AFP appears to have many departments; AFP Suit’s in Sydney, Melbourne etc, APS security guards, ACT police… 500 extra will not make at visible difference in the ACT at all.

500 extra officers seems like a lot. Does onyone know how many serving members the AFP has now.
@ toriness…… AS I read it the AFP serve the nation and ACT Policing serve the general policing needs of the ACT.

so a REAL increase of 500 officers ie if 500 leave in the next 5 years, will 1000 NEW officers be recruited to increase the actual ongoing numbers? are these designated officers for the ACT?
