The Canberra Raiders are letting the world know that big Dave Shillington (this correspondent’s pre-season pick for going carney) has in fact been nominated for the NRL’s 2011 Ken Stephen Medal, awarded for “outstanding involvement in the community”.

Starting early in the year with his involvement in Shave For a Cure, Shillington helped raise almost $10,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation when he shaved his head at The Tradies club and convinced team mate Shaun Fensom and club CEO Don Furner to do the same.

David has been a leader in the Raiders’ community programs. He is a Rugby League Reads ambassador and also attended the Red Shield Appeal launch in Canberra for the Salvation Army.

He is about to commence a major mentoring role through Barnardos Australia, where he spends three hours a week mentoring troubled youth. He also presented at the 2011 ACT Youth Leadership Summit.

Well done to him.

This must be a different David Shillington to the one who was too important/arrogant to attend his mandatory drink driving counselling sessions earlier in the year, very nearly almost preventing him from travelling to NZ for the Warriors match. Good on him for doing charity work I guess, but Mother Theresa he ain’t.
