Another face lift for the Northern side of the Lake.

The Canberra Times has a story on another facelift for the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin.

In long ago 2006 the “R.G.Menzies Walk” was opened to formalise the string of paths between Commonwealth and Kings Avenues.

Now $7.5 million of Commonwealth money is going into paving it, installing lights, building a new footbrige bridge over the Nerang Pool outlet, and putting in new ramps.

All very nice I’m sure. But wasn’t it already very nice?

Bummer – I think they should build a little bridge for the walkers/joggers over that bit of road, and forget all their other improvements. It is quite nerve-wracking trying to push a big stroller across there in a gap between speeding cars.

I guess it would be actual structural stuff though, rather than concreting and beautifying.

I thought they were tarting up the ‘bridge to bridge’ walk?

Do they only mean walking from one bridge to the other and then back again?

Yes, you still have to dodge the cars…that’s south of the lake though, this project only covers the north.

Yeah – I’m thinking this is going to encourage packs of slow wanderers taking up the whole path, and ruin things for the fitness walkers.

Have they fixed up the access to Kings Ave bridge yet, or do you still have to nip across 3 lanes of fast traffic speeding round a bend at you?

That’s a lovely old building…let it be!

I know, rabbits are very bad but they give the area a bucolic English charm.

From what I can tell, the whole area between Mt Pleasant and the John Gorton Building in Parkes is infested with rabbits so the entire area would need to be targetted for extermination.

just knock down the john gorton building and turn it into a carpark.

Don’t pave it! Its the one place those two bloody roller bladers with their stupid wrist bells don’t annoy everyone else who uses the central basin each lunch break!

Roller bladers and recumbant cyclists should all be shot

As long as they don’t put cafes or some sort of wack enterntainment/cosmopolitan/”Canberra has an insecurity complex because we aren’t enough of a city” precinct in then I’m happy.

There’s two on the other side of the lake that aren’t being used, send them over there 😉

Rabbits? What for….target practice? They’d be the first thing I’d spend money on getting rid of.

From the CT:
“Suggestions were made that an asphalt walkway would be better for cyclists and runners, while others believed a gravel path was more cost-effective. “

The stretch of path that runs past Blundell’s cottage to King’s Avenue has both and it seems to work well. However the bike path is starting to rise in a number of places from tree roots. It would be good for us regular commuters if the NCA smoothed it out.

As long as they don’t put cafes or some sort of wack enterntainment/cosmopolitan/”Canberra has an insecurity complex because we aren’t enough of a city” precinct in then I’m happy. All I need is the path, the lake, some trees, ducks in the morning and rabbits at dusk.

“Would be nice to see the paths around Lake Ginninderra revamped while they are splashing some cash…”

Different government Kramer. LBG = NCA. LG = ACT.

And anyway – ACT govt look after the basics like potholes and busted signs and footpaths? Yeah right.

For instance: I asked Roads ACT to fix an ever-widening pothole on Flemington outside the waste transfer station weeks ago. They finally patched it a couple of days ago, but left its twin 300 m up the road…

If they can’t get this sort of stuff right when there’s stuff-all rain to pothole roads and make grass grow, what hope have they got if it starts to rain again?

Are they? Heck. Surprise me it would not.

“GM corn”

Is General Motors diversifying – since they do such a crap job at cars…?
Bathurst next weekend! Young fella’s going to have to put his birthday on hold for 24 hours.

And on the NCA – what’s with the fine crop of weeds you’re growing all across the bridge?

Oh, Gungahlin Al, you crack me up! Don’t you recognise GM corn when you see it?

Hmm…like I said, I train there each week & have never thought of it as narrow, muddy & full of potholes. Nor have I ever had any issues with cyclists/runners (depending on what I’m doing at the time). Once again, if the NCA could manage to keep the existing facilities in working order I’d be a happy man.

& Kramer…isn’t that a different pot of money?

Gungahlin Al2:22 pm 07 Oct 08

Muddy, potholed and narrow actually JB. And with the conflict between cyclists and pedestrians, somewhat hazardous for the sheer number of people using it.
So hear hear NCA – what took so long?

And on the NCA – what’s with the fine crop of weeds you’re growing all across the bridge?

Would be nice to see the paths around Lake Ginninderra revamped while they are splashing some cash…

It will be good in that the path next to the lake will be sealed which means when they block off every other sealed path on the north side due to Floriade or whatever other event is on you can still rollerblade from bridge to bridge.

But this way it will be nicerer!

> All very nice I’m sure. But wasn’t it already very nice?

Yes, I thought so. I train there every week, it’s the last place I thought needed a facelift. I’d be happy if they could just keep the seats & bubblers in working order.
