This came in as a comment to the earlier bullying story but I thought it was worth a run:

Hi worried_mum,

I created an account purely to respond to you as your story really got to me. I’m only 19 so high school wasn’t too long ago for me and some of what you said bears some resemblance to h high school life.

Firstly, I just wanted to share my experience. I was midway through year 9 and also a A-B student when it begun. I had been bullied since year 7 but nothing too extreme. Actually I got beat up go the first time at the beginning of grade 8 at school and it happened twice that year. Year 9 was when it got bad. A certain gang would throw food at me, yell at me, push me over as they walked past me and when they felt like it, they would hit me. Always would be random. I had told the teachers, the principle, the vice principle, the front office, the councillor and the youth workers yet they did NOTHING to stop it. They made me feel like I was in the wrong. When they decided to bash me, other students would gather around and watch and even film it on their phones. I eventually dropped out of school and didn’t return to until college. Even after I dropped out, I was targeted. Turns out that group had connections with a even more dangerous and notorious group that even the police were scared of. I got beat up in woden interchange so bad I was put into hospital for a few days. The police still did NOTHING and said to me “you shouldn’t know these type of people” like I chose to know them. Another time, a group of boys from chisholm high school threatened me with knives at the shops. Another time, that same group broke into my bedroom but my mother called the police. I cant say what happened on here.I had to disappear from the world. I fell through terrible mental issues, addictions and ran away for about a month. I was very close to being gone forever but there was one person saved me. I have many horror stories. I won’t go into detail and I don’t mean to scare you, I just dread for this to happen to anyone else as I know how dark it is.

I STRONGLY advise you move your daughters. Chisholm was very strongly linked to the gang that abused me. It is a very “dodgy” suburb. And speaking for someone younger and “in” with what’s going on, there are very bad crowds there. I knew of many girls who got abused by both boys and girls. Please move her! I suggest telopea park as the crowd will be less likely to be linked to anyone there. Back when I was in high school, Chisholm, Melrose, stromlo and deakin were all linked. There was a gang in each school that were all friends. In saying that, deakin and stromlo are better and I would look into those if you wanted something south side.

In my opinion, nothing is worth risking in terms of your daughters safety. Please just move her, she will thank you later. There’s no getting through to kids like that, well I just know there was nothing I could’ve done to make them stop bullying me. I’m now attending university and I haven’t hear or seen from that gang for years. I just had to get away from them. They still do the same things as before and many of them have gotten locked up. I don’t think it’s wise to leave your daughter in that environment and you have to take her out of there and soon she will grow up and be surrounded by amazing people like I am now. Stay positive and optimistic!

Good luck!

And I apologise if my message is hard to read, I am typing it on my mobile phone.

#22, actually it was the other way round, the (female) worker came barrelling out and yelled utter filth and behaved in an aggro manner, terrifying the (female) neighbour, in front of her husband and observed by another neighbour. That’s right, bullying behaviour. All the abused neighbour had done was ask a person in a parked car to move so her driveway was not blocked, and suggest they park in the (ample) parking bays at the refuge. Turns out the car was there to pick up the worker and was trying to avoid the cameras because they were banned (that’s right, all problems are now in the street because of the cameras – hence all the loitering by undesirables).

The AVO matter is before the courts this week and is likely to be dismissed as there is absolutely no substance to it. However it serves to indicate how bad things have become. There has never, ever been anything like this or the criminal activity, bongs found etc until the refuge went in. Its a no-brainer.

As for human trash, it takes one to know one, Comic. And as for breaking the cycle, how could that possibly happen when these young people are given everything on a plate and there are no consequences? WE are having to clean up the mess time after time and they get off scot-free.

If you are so enamoured by the idea, how about contacting Minister Rattenbury tomorrow and offering your street for relocation? They will be looking for one soon.

You live in Chisholm. Do you honestly expect anyone to believe you when you say these problems only started when the refuge opened? lol.

Anyways, stay on topic, this thread is not about you being a cold hearted nimby, it’s about horrifying bullying that is out of control, in Chisholm.

As I said before, until parents are held accountable or even lose their kids, and until the disgusting victim blaming is gone, things will only get worse.

#14, Huh, and ‘Comic’ has repeatedly been attempting to cane ME for not wanting such persons all grouped together and taking over my tiny street?! Ironic.
BTW it is a nightmare living here now. I hope you are happy Comic, Poetix and others who have No Idea. We have had criminal damage to cars, theft of trade tools, traspass and loitering of undesirables, an AVO taken out (by staff member of the refuge) on the resident living next door, etc etc. So much for ‘oh the poor homeless young people.’ An Absolute Nightmare. Hopefully it will go somewhere else soon. We are certainly agitating for that.

Ok, so you seem to be defending you poor and lovely neighbour who committed a act of violence on a staff at the refuge? What a great human being.

You also live in Chisholm, you have no proof any of your allegations have anything to do with those teenagers.

Also, it’s not ironic. A child being homeless doesnot equal human trash. Actually, it more than likely means they are trying to break the cycle.

Major problem with Chisholm, monash, theodore and Richardson is way too many government housing filth. These suburbs and surrounding schools will never be fixed until something is done about the disgusting POS that plague the area.

Yes while one can find low life scum across all socioeconomic areas it’s fairly obvious they are mostly found in the lower socioeconomic bracket.Understandably no one wants to live next door to aggressive, noisy, quarreling bogans whose backyards are littered with all sorts of rubbish etc.The really difficult thing is what to do with them or where to place them, particularly when one has to factor in the human rights act.

So if someone can solve that dilemma i’m sure those that have no choice but to deal with the problem would be eternally grateful.

Maybe make Canberra less attractive place to live by reducing the number of government houses on offer? From what I read recently Canberra has the highest per capita number of govt housing of all capital cities.

Great idea if you want to see normal people who hit a run of bad luck ending up homeless. Not that this isn’t happening already of course.
The trash are always going to be the last ones out, squeezing public housing would block access to it by people in crisis who legitimately need it.

I see nothing unreasonable with placing caveats on the lease for a government house (ie. criminal conviction of anyone residing there during that lease, you lose the lease; failure to keep the peace can result in the same thing, keep the property free of rubbish, debris etc.). Some sort of incentive for people to behave themselves for the privilege of having government subsidised housing. And people in private rentals will all say that yes it is a privilege to have rent adjusted based on your income, to have reasonable standards for repair and maintenance of said property etc. (which doesn’t always happen in the private sector market).

Dont get me wrong, there are some very nice people (some of them are my friends) in government housing.

We have this culture in the ACT of being a ‘soft target’ – our magistrates wont give you jail time, we are perceived as having a soft stance on drugs (some people still think cannabis use is legal here!!), our schools are not empowered to deal with problem children effectively, and now if you cant pay your traffic fine they will let you pay it off at $5 a week….

…It seems that we have this touchy-feely approach from our government, where if someone gets bashed, the accused is encouraged to ‘talk about their feelings” over a cup of tea and bickies. The victim of crime is given less support than the accused.

On face value, it appears we are breeding criminal behaviour through our public school system by not empowering schools to manage inappropriate behaviour effectively.

This is what happens when family gets involved. Some of you may have read this story years ago. It was girls in the same gang. Sad fact is, the only thing I could do was to just run away, leave. Let them win their game. You don’t want to win that kind of game anyway.

Thank you for sharing my post.

I was very anxious when writing it but worried_mum’s story just greatly upset me and brought back memories and so I felt I had to share a snippet of how bad bullying can get. And also to show how things can turn around. I’m still angered by the school and authorities but I feel helpless in that aspect. It upsets me to realise this still happens, to imagine another girl is in my place. I wish worried_mum and we family all the best!

The problem is that they move them into good neighbourhoods in the hope that everyone else will model good behaviour. Instead they become a pest to everyone in the neighbourhood. Then its back to moving them all into one area which then becomes a hive of criminal families which cause issues for surrounding suburbs. So then its decided to move them out and let them live in good suburbs to have people model good behaviour… and around and around it goes.

I’d just move them further and further out of the city until they got the hint that if they behave they can live with everyone else.

That said, I think I know who you are referring to – a family in Gilmore who have had at least one member in prison. Awful people.

My daughters’ experience at Chisholm was not like yours at all – they both enjoyed their time there – I am sad that you had such a miserable time. One of my daughters is the same age as you so I imagine she was in the same year. Like I say, a very different experience of the same school at the same time.
I don’t think you can say a school is always going to be a problem. These sorts of problems tend to go with certain cohorts who then move on. (Eg, it was well known that the year above mine at Melrose (I was in class of 78) were absolute horrors, while we were not). I would expect Gunners schools to have more problems from here on, given that the bulge in the population is there now and its generally more overcrowded state.

Thought the previous bullying article was about a Belco school?

Given the demographics of the school this is hardly a surprise.

Therein lies the problem in our,at times, pathetically run society ie. one send one’s children to school and reasonably expects teachers and authorities to prevent and or deal with this abominable bullying yet they DO NOT. The authorities have allowed this totally unacceptable behaviour to go unchecked so they are effectively condoning this behaviour by not acting swiftly and decisively and are part of the problem!

Hopefully publicity and bad google results for Caroline Chisholm School High school and the principle Wendy Wurfel will force them to do something.

The more times we mention Caroline Chisholm School, the better.

There must be zero tolerance to bullying at school and the principal needs to suspend and if necessary expel repeat offenders if they continue bullying. However when this occurs outside the school as in ‘worried mum’s bullying post then it’s obvious that the police and judiciary must act swiftly and decisively.Worried mum indicated that there were 10 breaches of the protection order and the low-life had not been reigned in and held accountable for their actions.

The police are more than happy to remind people that they are not permitted to take the law into their own hands, which is fine, however if they’re not upholding the law then they’re not doing their job so it’s hardly surprising that some will do whatever they consider necessary to address the problem.

Where is Dexter when you need him?

Good on you Amelia100.

I believe that here has to be some duty of care with the school here.

ACT education needs to think about its policy towards behaviour management of school kids. There obviously must be some specific demographic in place that makes their policy of we’ll send them home to play play station for a week (after giving them a weeks notice of this etc).

Instead of suspension, have cells in schools, where instead of having a holiday at home they serve out their suspension and do their schoolwork. May give them a glimpse of the future (if they move out of act of course). Time out early if they get their schoolwork done to a good standard etc. shove a video feed of their classroom(s) so they can watch the teacher educate this railing to learn, from the comfort of their cell.

What the bloody hell is going on? Don’t the laws apply to school kids? Have their bogan parents managed to browbeat the authorities to the extent that their bogan kids are allowed to run rampant?

“The authorities” simply don’t take it seriously. Things that would lead to charges if they happened in the workplace are ignored if they happen in schools.

Where the hell are the cops in this?

EvanJames said :

Pretty much, the parents drop the F-Bombs and scream and yell at anyone who questions their behaviour or doesn’t do what the bogans want. That leaves people reluctant to deal with them at all. Then you’ve got the kids who know what they can get with exactly and push it to the limit and sometimes beyond with no repercussions. They’ve got the social skills of a toddler and the minds to match.

EvanJames said :

Why have a nasty minority been allowed to hijack the education system to this extent?

A combination of fear and powerlessness of the system. You’ll have people standing up to defend them with ‘but they deserve an education too!’. No, they don’t.

When it comes to families that are generational criminals, it should be viewed as as bad as direct child abuse. Kids should be removed from the families and the cycle of criminal behaviour broken rather than just left to fester and spread in suburbs.

I’d expect the Chisholm school to either ignore the issue or pay some lip service with little in the way of action.

Any teachers around? Could you explain why a suspension AKA a holiday, is any sort of punishment at all?

gentoopenguin10:33 am 27 May 13

Well done Amelia for getting on with your life and for sharing your story. Bullying is an insidious and awful thing to deal with. It can cause all kinds of mental distress. Re: the worried mum’s earlier post – I couldn’t agree more. She needs to more her daughter.

All the people complaining about increasing numbers of parents sending their kids to private schools, I think if you scratch the surface you’ll find that this is behind a lot of it: parents wanting schools where there are rules that are enforced, not subverted to the aggressive bogan influence.

Why have a nasty minority been allowed to hijack the education system to this extent?
