Not a lot of bands around Canberra do quite what HYG do. The band has been playing in one form or another since 2017, with the ever-rotating line-up fronted by Mark Wilson on guitar and vocals eventually settling on Oskar Urbas on bass and Lucius Culliton on drums. Establishing themselves at the centre of the up-and-coming Canberra psych-rock scene, the band landed themselves opening spots for bands as diverse as EGOISM, Hideous Sun Demon and the Pretty Littles before taking a break at the end of 2018.
Not one for the conventional route, HYG have come back strong, delivering a blistering live-show at house shows and bush doofs around Canberra. Filled with other-worldly guitar soundscapes, demonic clarinet solos and extended improvised jams, they have a penchant for getting lost in their own sound and set, yet always with the clear end-goal in mind of taking captivated crowds on a unique journey time after time. Music you can dance to, music you can lay back and close your eyes to.
