SouthFest is a day-long community party celebrating life in the Tuggeranong valley with a healthy chunk of #TuggersPride.

You’re invited!

Join Tuggeranong Arts Centre for a day of arts activity and entertainment around the Tuggeranong town centre and at their beautiful lakeside venue on Saturday 24th of November as part of the new SouthFest community festival.

SouthFest is a day-long community party celebrating life in the Tuggeranong valley with a healthy chunk of #TuggersPride. With everything from market stalls to community entertainment, youth activities, a sports hub, food vendors and more, SouthFest promises fun for the whole family. And TAC will be joining the party with performance pop-ups, sculpture workshops and free music overlooking Lake Tuggeranong.

The day will start with a pop-up performance by TAC’s own Fresh Funk urban dance crews in the laneway off Anketell Street at 11 am. Keeping the party vibe pumping in the laneway will be musician Patrick Haesler who will intrigue and delight with his unique style of multi-instrumental looping. Haesler masterfully layers live loops of trumpet, EWI, bass and keyboard to create mesmerising jazz and fusion sounds.

Sculpture workshops will also be on offer in the laneway, in which community members can join two local artists to complete some monumental sculptural installations in the old gazebo space. The artists, Nathan J Lester and Rebecca Selleck, will be adding the final touches to their sculptures and are welcoming extra hands to contribute between 11 am – 1 pm.

Rebecca’s work explores the urban landscape of Tuggeranong, and prompts us to reconsider the aesthetics of this particular space in the town centre. She states, “this interactive community sculpture is constructed from local urban rubble. In its initial form, it is a monument to the sprawling human habitats that have displaced countless ecosystems.” During SouthFest, the community is invited to plant within its crevices flora that would have grown in the area before the waves of concrete and brick took over.

I AM and I HOPE, a sculpture by Nathan J Lester will represent the people of Tuggeranong community and their hopes for the future. Contributors are asked to share something of themselves with one positive word and one hope for the future, which will all be joined to create large sculptures. Nathan has already begun some of the work with young people in the Tuggeranong area, and the installation is shaping up to be a colourful and kinetic snapshot of our community.

Come along and help the artists complete their sculptural works! No need to register, just turn up!

If you’re in the mood for a more relaxed afternoon, head down to the Arts Centre from 1 pm where jazz band Lulu Swing will be performing in The Hunting Lodge overlooking Lake Tuggeranong. Grab yourself a Capital Brewing beer or a glass of Long Rail Gully wine, watch the gentle ripples on the lake and listen to the soaring vocals of singer Monica Moore.

Then stick around to finish the afternoon off with the rocking tunes of The Fuelers! The Fuelers play original material, drawing from bluegrass & oldtime, swing, rockabilly, country, and 70’s TV commercials. It’s a style that crosses borders, to say the least.
