Ask RiotACT: What's happening at Dickson Library?

Dickson Library

Suddenly in the middle of winter, that warm refuge in Dickson has been shut down indefinitely.

All they are saying is that urgent building work is needed. For weeks now, no indication of what needs fixing or how long it’s going to take. I hardly ever see anyone actually doing any work in there.

But alas, they finally put this notice up in the window…

I’m embarrassed for our society that we have homeless people and so many.

They have a new sign up. The library is partly re-opening soon.

If it was asbestos, wouldn’t they cover the books?

I read something in the paper late last month – it was shut as there was a possibility of asbestos and they needed to do some work. At the time they said it would be shut for around 4 weeks. I’ve walked past several times and there doesn’t appear to be a lot of work happening. Does anyone know when it is going to re-open?

I heard (very indirectly so it may not be true) that they found asbestos somewhere in there and will only be reopening once it’s dealt with.

Not sure what that means in practice though, since as far as I understand it if it was normal asbestos sheeting it wouldn’t cause much danger if undisturbed.

What I read elsewhere is there was some water damage and some sheeting needs to be replaced. Hence it needs to be disturbed to fix/replace.
