It’s been revealed the Belconnen Police Station and attached public car park had to be placed into lockdown after a member of the public tried to surrender a dangerous weapon.

The man arrived at the station at 10 am on Wednesday (19 July) trying to hand in a hand grenade, and the AFP Bomb Response Team were called in to render the weapon safe.

The lockdown was lifted at about 11 am.

It’s led to police issuing a reminder for people to call ahead to let officers know they’ll be turning up with dangerous items such as firearms or explosives.

Those wishing to dispose of or surrender items should call ACT Policing Operations on 131 444 in the first instance for advice.

This advice could include making an appointment to attend a police station or the ACT Firearms Registry to surrender items, or for ACT Policing/AFP members to come to you to dispose of the item safely.

It is not recommended to attend a police station with dangerous items without making prior contact.

If you’re unsure if a firearm or other dangerous item is not loaded, actioned or safe, you can leave it where it is and call police to attend.

Anyone with information regarding dangerous weapons or explosives in the community is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
