I’m planning a little afternoon picnic for my best friend’s hens (more of a ladies lunch than wild booze and penis straws) in October.

Keen to do an easy hike with great views of Canberra but it must have road access so that we can hopefully utilise My Sweet Alice and have car access in-case someone can’t do the walk.

It will be a surprise for the bride-to-be at the top – hence the need for a walk with a great view at the summit. Most of us will be coming from the Snowy Mountains so we would love your help to find the perfect spot!

Sorry – I should have mentioned that the Cork Oak Forest doesn’t have a view – but it is such a cool, surreal spot. You could have a picnic in there and it would be most memorable for a fairy tale sort of picnic.

Plenty of parking nearby as well.

Also consider Mt Pleasant, accessed via Duntroon.

Red Hill could work too.

Spot 1: Black Mountain Summit Walk – views all around Canberra as you walk around the hill – the trail crosses the road near a carpark which you can make as your start/finish point

Spot 2: Cork Oak Forest at the National Arboretum – then walk up to the Himalayan cedar forest for a picnic, or a picnic spot up at Dairy Farmers Hill.

Spot 3: Mount Stromlo Observatory has a great picnic area that looks out towards the Cotter Dam and the Brindabellas.

Ezy’s suggestions are spot on. Any of those would be great – I was going to suggest Mount Stromlo and Black Mountain myself! The Cork Oak Forest walk itself doesn’t have a view (it’s a flat loop), so you would need to walk up the nearby hill for that. Lovely place though.
