Whether you live in a two-storey house or a studio apartment, keeping your space clean – as important as it is – can be one of those jobs that many of us simply don’t have the time for. From vacuuming to dusting, and window-washing to deep cleans in kitchens and bathrooms, you might feel like it’s something you’d rather not have to deal with – so why not hire a cleaning company instead?

Hiring such a company is a great way to get your home beautifully cleaned at a professional level without taking any time out of your week. Whether your lease is up, you’re looking for a one-off job or considering a regular booking, taking that extra time and energy of your own back will come as a huge relief. But how can you know what makes a great cleaning company?

In this article, we’ll give you a quick rundown of some of the most important traits to look for in a top-quality cleaning company, as well as a useful guide to some of Canberra’s best operators.

What makes a great cleaning company?

Hiring a cleaner can be a complex process, as a lot more goes into cleaning a home than you might think.

Here’s a list of qualities a great cleaning business should have.

  • Reliability. This means not only being on time but also understanding that they are being invited into your house and therefore creating a solid foundation of trust.
  • Affordability. You don’t need to hire the cheapest cleaners on the market but you should get what you pay for. There’s nothing worse than being ripped off.
  • Efficiency. The Canberra cleaners you decide on should do the work at a reasonable pace without cutting corners while ensuring excellent results.
  • Respectful. If you are hiring cleaners to tidy your home, you want them to respect your space and your belongings.
  • Effective. When the cleaners are finished, your home should be spotless. Attention to detail is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a regular clean and an end-of-lease clean?

An end-of-lease service is a lot more involved than a regular house clean. In an end-of-lease clean, the service will not only include vacuuming and wiping surfaces as it normally would, but also cleaning out empty cabinets and drawers, wiping down windows, and cleaning your stovetop. It depends on what kind of property you have. The purpose is to make the home look virtually untouched for the next tenant.

Are there environmentally friendly cleaning products?

Absolutely! Nowadays, many companies specialise in products that are made with sustainable manufacturing practices, minimise waste, are naturally derived, safe and non-toxic, and feature biodegradable ingredients that won't harm the environment or the inhabitants of your home.

Is it worth hiring a cleaning company for regular jobs?

This depends entirely on your lifestyle, but if you have a busy schedule, are in a large home or are living alone, then it's something you should consider. If any or all of those traits apply to you, then hiring a professional cleaning company can mean an extra couple of hours in your week to do the things you want to do, all the while living in a professionally maintained home.

Can a cleaning service also do laundry and dishes?

Occasionally. Dishes and laundry do not fall under the normal list of jobs you can expect professional cleaners to perform, so it's best not to assume they will do these things for you. However, it's worth asking what they are willing to do, particularly if you are looking to hire them regularly.

Can I provide the cleaners with my own cleaning products?

For the most part, yes. Cleaners will bring their own mops and vacuums, but if you have specific products that you'd like them to use due to allergies or wanting to be more environmentally friendly, then you can consult the company and make sure this will be acceptable.

I have a very good experience with Canberra Express Cleaners(https://canberraexpresscleaners.com.au), they were on time and displayed a high quality of work. They are highly recommended for Commerical Cleaning.

ive heard really good things about https://cleaningbrilliance.com.au/ for commercial cleaning

I changed from using services of cleaning companies to an individual’s as they often swapped cleaners that was what I did not like because I am the one who care about privacy. One of my friends referred her to me. She is a professional and responsive cleaner. Her price was reasonable, and a bit surprised me as it was much cheaper than those of the companies I had used. After almost two years, she is still doing great job.

Amy Victoria11:04 pm 03 Jan 20

Could you possibly share their name? I agree that swapping cleaners all the time is super frustrating

Hi Amy, Her name is Huong. She is doing Master of Accounting if I am not wrong. She sometimes comes together with her husband Daniel. They are very nice and excellent cleaners. Her number is 0410189138.

Harrison Jasmin9:10 am 07 Mar 20

Hi Saralyall,
I totally agree with you. Just about posting a similar review for these guys. They are awesome! I am happy to be a reference for them if someone is after a cleaner. My email is jas.courtney@gmail.com and happy to give my phone number through my email.

Our experiences with cleaning companies have definitely been a bit hit and miss. Some cleaning companies can be fantastic and then completely drop the ball and others just can’t do the basics from the start. We have recently started using Superb Property Group and found them to be the best. Their attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile is admirable and great value for money. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for office cleaning or any other cleaning service. http://www.superbpropertygroup.com.au

Our experience with Cosmic Cleaning was less than stellar. The casual appearance of the staff was reflected in the job that we received. We requested an initial deep clean with the intention of having the company clean our apartment on a regular basis. There was little adherence to their own cleaning checklist. While Louie did offer to rectify the situation by sending another cleaner at a later date, the cleaning job provided was so poor that my wife and I were not willing to provide a second chance. At $350+ this was an expensive and disappointing experience. Based on this outcome, we cannot recommend Cosmic Cleaning.

Emily from Clean ‘Em is amazing! She has been cleaning our busy household monthly for the last 2 years. She is thorough, reliable and really really well priced! I highly recommend Emily for all your cleaning needs!

look in the “Work wanted” section on gumtree. should easily find someone

maybe it’s a single person that only pees once in the morning before going off to work and a couple of times at night. between many people that shower elsewhere (such as a gym or workplace) i can understand how it doesn’t get too festy….

Who cleans a bathroom only once a month? I would say that a monthly clean is a strange ask. A bathroom that doesn’t get a minimum clean is going to be a much heavier cleaning task than a bathroom that is kept to a maintenance clean. For a monthly clean expect to pay quite a premium – or have a high supplier turnover.

Depends how you treat the bathroom. If the bathroom is wiped around after use and kept tidy, a thorough clean once a month might be enough. I used to have a monthly cleaner (three person household) and that was enough, as none of us were grots that fouled the place up in between cleans. On the other hand, I have seen some people’s bathrooms that need cleaning after each use. Depends on who uses the bathroom and their habits.

“monthly clean of only bathrooms” though makes me think there might be many bathrooms, such as in a business. Do you mean bathrooms or toilets?

Bebrite have cleaners all over the Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. They also do regular house cleaning and are very affordable.

Here is their website http://www.bebrite.com.au/

I’ve been using Absolute Domestics and our cleaner is fabulous. Everything is bright and shiny, she is totally reliable and tolerant of renovations.

Almost half the cost of our previous, less competent cleaners too.

You could try Dream City Cleaning and Housekeeping
Well presented, reliable and do a good job.
maybe not the cheapest but have insurances etc.
Check out their website; dreamcitycleaning.com.au

Hi There. We found cleaner called A Cut Above Cleaning in Canberra. The lady who runs the company is called Tania. They dont have a website, they dont advertise and this because they dont need to because they are that good. We had massive with issues real agent asking clean & fix that were originally there when we moved in! She was willing and help us with these issues even though we were interstate.

If you want someone is professional, does job on time and supports you through the process I suggest you avoid anyone Google and call this lady. She doesnt advertise because she doesnt need to.

Tania is her name and they are priced well for the service they provide.

Tania 0402124370 – A Cut Above Cleaning

Hello,
I would not recommend A Cut Above to anyone, friend or foe.
They charge way more than other cleaners and are unreliable and unprofessional.
I had a clean booked and confirmed by text on Monday 2 July. When I messaged Tania on the day to find out the time the cleaners would arrive I was phoned by her and told that the booking would have to be rescheduled as they only clean on the Northside one day a fortnight. The clean was rescheduled to the Friday afternoon of the same week. I was given a window between 12 and 1pm. At 2:30pm Tania called to say that the cleaners could not find a park. I was asked to give them my parking space in my building which I could not do, and so the clean was cancelled because the cleaners had to finish by 3:30pm. The cleaners told me Tania would be in touch with me to reschedule another time. I never heard back from Tania. My efforts to follow her up resulted in me being told that they were fully booked on the next date I requested three weeks later.
All I can say is, don’t waste your time with this lot.

Thanks ThatGuy. I’m kinda looking for someone to regularly clean my home though. Someone who will not only do the carpets, windows, kitchen and bathroom but also polish my furniture, make the occasional bed, put on and clear the dishwasher. You know – like a mother would. Except not my mother. She’s very messy and a little bitchy. Bit like me, really. So not like me or my mother. Someone good, who’ll take the time and care to make a house look like a home rather than a bomb-site (which is what it looks like now)!

That made me lol.

I told my 6yo the other day that she had not done a very good job of wiping the bench and her reply was “But mum, a clean kitchen is a sign of a wasted life.” I get the feeling that she will be looking for a cleaner in a couple of decades too.

Dear Lazy, thanks for the suggestion. But just spent 6 weeks in intensive care. Not up to doing it myself. But thanks.

pink little birdie11:37 am 16 Nov 11

My dude Terry is awesome. He’ll do what you ask and clean windows and help you move furniture. He comes weekly to mine and few friends. Say Jess gave you his number. (I need him to move furniture in the next couple of weeks so refering people is good). 0401072439

He does cleans the deck and stuff. and our house is less of a bomb site since he started cleaning regularly.

Pretty sure they’ll go southside – Salloum Cleaning (02) 6241 4339.

They did an end of lease clean for us in Bruce that received praise from both the owner and agent. I remember them being really well priced too (from memory, I think it was $500 – $600 for a 4 bed, 2 living, 2 bath house top to toe). This was a couple years ago though.

realityskin, im looking for a cleaner on the southside. where did you get your cleaner’s details?

I steriotype people, I play my stereo. I don’t care how you spell it.

Roger that, Maelinar.

SterEotyping….

I still don’t understand cantonese.

Or Hongkongese for that matter.

Or simaese if you please…

Hence the chinese text, I’m afraid I’m steriotyping again…

Yeah….. Right…..

I got it…

Ah, no I don’t….

Besides, Mael didn’t go to ANU.

I think I got it.

That was a reoccurring and disgusting issue at the ANU when I was there…

A seat isn’t something you’re meant to stand on.

This in particular applies to toilet seats, and the associated detritus when certain elements try to use the facilities whilst standing on them.

I have no idea what the question marks mean…..

LOL, maelinar LOL…

err the ??? is a chinese text – probably not installed on the computer…

Besides what’s wrong with leaving the toilet seat up? – ahh a popular conversation. I love the irony of being accused of being lazy by not putting the seat back down, when its laziness driving the conversation in the first place by them being too idle to put the seat back up – and then having the gall to mention something about it.

I’ll quickly pass over the obvious solution that if everybody puts the lid down, then everybody has to lift something up, no matter how they are using the toilet.

You should always leave a toilet in whichever way you would like to be remembered. I’ll just put that out there as something everybodys grandmother should have told them as children. ??????????????????????- yes that message is for you, I know who you are, and you have grandmothers. And its a SEAT, same as a SEAT, that you use EVERY DAY in some form or another. I’ll not dwell except to say if thats how you want to be remembered, so be it.

The presented solution is often to leave the lid up, and the sitting seat down – hmmm so I’m to contribute infantessimally towards your obesity by using the calorie of energy it takes to flick a seat into how you want to interact with a toilet ?

Do it yourself lardass is my response to that one.

As I mentioned before, the obvious solution is to put the entireity in the down position. Believe it or not, there are several reasons why you should be doing this anyway. Firstly, particles from the loo when flushing get out. If thats not bad enough, if you have a 4 legged indoor pet, it drinks out of the loo. Anything thats in the loo gets transferred to your pet, and then whatever it licks in the future. If those two aren’t bad enough, natural evaporation takes over, and you lose potable water that should otherwise be drinking water.

Back on topic – apart from having someone else clean your house what are the benefits of hiring a housekeeper and what is the general cost? Do they charge by the hour of by the amount of work to be done? I’m curious as I’ve never had one.

I have a cleaner visit every fortnight, she mops the floors, vacuums rugs and lounge, dusts, does 3 toilets, 2 bathrooms, cleans the kitchen (sometimes when im lazy she puts new sheets on bed ) 2.5 hours. $70.

And now I will humbly submit to being soundly berated by my partner 🙂

FFS.

I would have thought it was obviously abundant that it was a joke.

You make it sound like a *bad* thing, CanberraResident!

I took Mr Evil’s comment for what it was, merely adding to a humorous comment first made by Neanderthalsis. Obviously humor is a personal taste. Besides what’s wrong with leaving the toilet seat up? Why must women make us put it down when they can simply lift it up when they finish?

Back on topic – apart from having someone else clean your house what are the benefits of hiring a housekeeper and what is the general cost? Do they charge by the hour of by the amount of work to be done? I’m curious as I’ve never had one.

There’s nothing wrong with Draught beer either. No further correspondence will be entered into unless its to compare it with East India Pale Ale, or suchlike.

I never knew that being metro meant having to have a humour labotomy.

For the record, I found both articles distasteful, as well as the entire topic only has a threadbare and failing fast link to Canberra/ACT.

Who is the filthier person: Mr Evil or somebody who needs a cleaner to pick up after them for 3 hours every fortnight ?

** Disclaimer **
I am a supporter of the cleaning/household industry, however the tenor of the article does not make this apparent.

I do not employ a cleaner or any form of household assistance at this present time.

Oi! What’s wrong with doing the washing up once a week? That’s what weekends are for. I’m not wasting my precious eatin’ and TV-watchin’ time in the week doing washing up. No way.

Weekends is for doing the washing, airing the mattress (they should come with handles), cooking the week’s lunches, fertilising the plants, shopping and washing the dishes.

So Canberra Resident, you think you can judge me because of a post????

Well, you’re totally wrong: I pick my nose and leave the boogers on the carpet, I’m living in the 80s, and I’m a non-smoker!

CanberraResident1:53 pm 31 Mar 08

I find the above post by the evil one extremely offensive.

Here’s a taste of your own medicine. No doubt you are divorced, have no money, hold down a job (but only barely), are living in the 70s, you eat fast food every night, and you have a dirty smelly bathroom. You leave the toilet seat up, you do your own dishes about once a week, and you wear the same undies three days in a row. Women run away from you at first sight. You pick your filthy toe-nails and leave them on the carpet. You treat dust as your friend, because you have no real ones. You have a bad reputation, and you probably gamble, smoke Winnie Reds, drink Draught beer and fart in public. Your favourite past-time is being an obnoxious ar@e on a public website.

You are … Mr Evil.

No correspondence will be entered in to.

I have an AWESOME one, but on the southside. Little Thai clean freak, she does wonders 😀

I’m in this boat too, mine just left for England for six months 🙁

She was really hard working, my only gripe is that she used to wash my clothes extra hot and put them in the dryer, and that damaged my new shirts… even when I kept them out of her sight, she managed to find my new clothes and ruin them! But that’s what happens when you pay someone to do the chores you’re too lazy to do yourself <:)
