We rely on our cars so much in everyday life, it is critical they are well maintained and in top working order. Not only is this important from a reliability and convenience standpoint, but also for the safety and protection of you and your family. In fact, it is easy to take your car for granted, until it breaks down, which is usually a timely reminder of how important a good mechanic is.

Throughout Canberra, there are many highly regarded and trustworthy mechanics who you can depend on to service your vehicle and keep you on the road. Like your car itself, it can be easy to overlook the importance of a mechanic, until you’ve dealt with a bad one.

To avoid shonky operators and find the best motor vehicle workshops in town, we asked our readers from Canberra and the surrounding region to share their experiences with leading local automotive repairers. Below, you will find a recommended list of the best ones. If you are not sure what you are looking for, the following checklist should help you decide which mechanic is for you.

What makes a great mechanic?

  • Qualifications and skills. This is a pretty obvious one, but not all mechanics are capable of solving the full range of mechanical issues that vehicle owners face. They may be able to troubleshoot and repair standard car problems, but might not be adept at getting to the bottom of the actual problem, specific to your car. Therefore, it is important to find a qualified professional with the best certification and training.
  • Passion and reliability. Most mechanics have a passion for cars and when it comes to the best ones, this quality will shine through with their attention to detail and outstanding customer service. Those who respect your car and its importance to you deserve your business. This entails clear communication of what service your vehicle requires, being honest about what they can and can’t provide, being upfront about costs, and providing tips and advice for maintaining your car in post-service.
  • Integrity. Mechanics should be completely above board when it comes to their transactions: no short-cuts, no overcharging, no hidden costs and no misrepresentations. They should charge a fair price that reflects the quality of work being done. They should also be honest about your options and not pressure you into things you don’t actually need.
  • Efficiency. Nobody wants a mechanic who takes an inordinate length of time to carry out repairs. Good mechanics have a strong work ethic and ensure they get the job done within the time frame they promise.
  • Knowledge. Motor vehicle technology rapidly evolves. The best mechanics stay on top of what is happening in the industry and what changes may affect the way cars are repaired. Where relevant, automotive repairers with updated qualifications to suit the latest service requirements are at a distinct advantage, especially when it comes to specialist servicing of vehicles such as trucks, 4x4s and luxury cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a child safety seat installed by a mechanic in Canberra?
Yes, most mechanics in the ACT can install child safety seats. There are strict laws governing restraints for children in vehicles so it is recommended child safety seats be installed and adjusted by a professional. A mechanic should also be able to check child seats for damage and ensure they are in safe working order, as well as provide advice on maintaining your child's seat.
If I can't get to a mechanic during the week, can I get my car serviced on the weekend?
Yes, many Canberra mechanics are open on Saturdays. Check with each individual business to ensure they are open on the weekend, but Saturday morning trading is reasonably common. There are also mobile mechanics that can come to you on weekends, although higher rates may apply.
Are any Canberra mechanics authorised vehicle inspections stations?
Yes, if your vehicle meets certain criteria you can take it to a mechanic that is listed as an authorised inspection station. Criteria that requires a roadworthy inspection includes the age of your car (more than six years old if transferring ownership); registration that has lapsed for more than 12 months; and if registration is transferring from interstate. There are 84 authorised inspection stations in the ACT.
How frequent should you inspect tyre pressure?
Drivers should inspect tyre pressure every one to two months by themselves. It is very handy to do the inspection at most petrol stations. This is important because a lot of areas around Canberra are currently under construction or are a developing project. There is a high possibility that nails and screws are dropped on the road, and might damage your tyre. Check your tyre for its required pressure, or ask you mechanic to show you the correct method.
What should I do if my Check Engine light is illuminated?
If your car's Check Engine light is illuminated, address it straight away. There are a range of issues that may be the cause, some more serious than others. Check your car's manual and consult your car service centre immediately.

I can highly recommend Harry’s Auto Care in Belconnen. Prompt, efficient and friendly service. Have taken previous cars to them – this week I took my ’98 Honda CRV which had a serious mechanical failure on a back wheel. Luckily this didn’t occur during the highway stretches of my daily commute. The fault turned out to be a snapped bolt. They quoted me half hour labour, replaced the bolt, checked the same bolts on the other wheels – and decided to let me simply drive away. In the past I’ve been charged aggressively for simple work at other mechanics – this was an amazing and heartfelt appreciated gesture. Thanks guys.
