I will be giving a talk for Socialist Alternative entitled ‘Can Obama solve the Middle East crisis?’

There are huge expectations in the United States and beyond about the first black American president. This talk examines how likely these expectations are to realised or disappointed, Obama’s record and the prospects for change in US policies towards Israel and Palestine. I will also cover Obama’s possible response to the economic crisis and global warming in the context of Obama being committed to (and trapped in the logic of) the profit system and US imperialism. This makes his room for manouvre on Palestine, the economy and global warming all fairly small.

Will Obama end up being a competent George W Bush?
