Canberra Connect take the day off

By Samuel Gordon-Stewart - 28 December 2005 16

I had reason to visit the Civic Canberra Connect shopfront today, only to arrive at the front door and find a sign saying that Canberra Connect shopfronts are all closed today.

When Katy waved her public holiday wand, she didn’t make today a public holiday, so what makes the shopfront special?

Around the same time I was there, a rather annoyed family discovered that the shopfront was closed…I guess this means the queues will be longer tomorrow.

What’s Your opinion?

Ha thumoer your last points are spot on

And yeah I dont mind this job its not for every one though. The one major draw back is having to be stuck offshore for 6 weeks.

Samuel,

Public servants are allowed to have days off. You see, they work full time, unlike you, so don’t complain.

And Shopfront workers also have to put up with the public who are often abusive and nasty.

Your lack of planning is not their responsibility.

Shauno,

sounds like a pretty choice gig.

Cheers

I work on the Exploration side of the business so mainly Seismic ships on 6 or 5 week on off rotations. Not the shorter rotations of 2 to 4 weeks that they do on the rigs.
So advantages are you get allmost 6 months off a year fully paid and fly door to door anywhere in the world for your 6 week break period.
Can play havoc on relationships though when your away for so long.
Another good thing I guess is no alcohol for 6 weeks while at work so you give the body a bit of a rest after 6 weeks of living it up.

Indeed Shauno, you must find the 2 weeks on/2 weeks off thing horrendous.

Some government industries go 24/7 as well, with normal 12hr shifts

*puts hand up as one of those ACT gov’t workers with the whole week as a shutdown*

:p

Yeah well dont complain to much. I’m working offshore south china sea. Oil and Gas industry never shuts down 24hours a day 365 days a year. And had to work a normal 12 hour shift as well. We did get as much lobster as we could eat though hehe

Excuse my typo. I start at 1800 NYE and finish at 0600 (maybe) New Years Day….hard enough for you? And yes, right in the middle of all of it

terubo 7:01 am 29 Dec 05

Soft shift, vg; try 0400 on New Year’s Day for the real action.

vg 9:46 pm 28 Dec 05

So I gather you’ll be joining me at work at 0400 on NYE then Midnite?

terubo 8:44 pm 28 Dec 05

Sam, you should be aware that certain sections of the public service have the entire week off – returning on Tuesday 3rd Jan.
-Phone ahead to check; I think that applies to ACT Govt bludgers too.

nice for some isnt it? others are welded to thier desks not able to get leave. I have 345 hours at full pay and keep getting the same old same old “cant allow you to go as leave has been allocated”. how do i become a Pube ? seems that thier lot is a succulent one

andrewbt 8:25 pm 28 Dec 05

As Caz said, i think the Public Service get today off as well…

vg 6:27 pm 28 Dec 05

Helps if you read the Minister’s entire release Sam

“Additional holidays may also be observed under industrial instruments applying to particular workplaces.”

i.e. today

Caz 6:22 pm 28 Dec 05

Isn’t it public service picnic day, ie, the extra day public servants always get off after Christmas and Boxing Day?
