Canberra couple Chris Hill and Jessica Lau’s desire to do something for the community and help people from different walks of life led them to open an industrial and family self-service laundromat.

Located across the road from Bunnings Tuggeranong, the eco-friendly Tuggers Laundromat is completely self-operated and uses technology to save water and energy.

The laundromat’s combination of industrial and family-friendly self-operated machines makes it the first of its kind in Canberra.

Mr Hill and Ms Lau felt that investing in a laundromat in the area was a sensible choice, with the increase of apartments and small businesses springing up along Anketell Street.

Mr Hill says their investment is already paying off and the couple has been inundated with support and interest since opening during Easter.

“People have been calling to check that we are open because we offer a laundry service that can cater for a wide range of needs. We can wash 6 baskets in one wash in under 30 minutes which saves time and money,” he said.

Mr Hill has had people from a wide range of places visit the laundromat on Anketell street.

“From out of town, doctor’s surgeries, horse clubs, car yards, restaurants, hairdressers or people just looking to wash their doonas and other large items before the cold weather hits.”

Ms Lau says the laundromat will bring customers to other businesses nearby, while they are waiting for their washing to finish.

“We see Tuggers Laundromat as being an integral part of the Tuggeranong community,” she said.

“We want it to be reliable and available. We have made it as user-friendly as possible by automating the detergent and softener dispensing process.”

“We are looking forward to partnering with other businesses in the area to keep customers in the area, rather than having them spend their time and money in the city.”

The Canberra couple will open their doors for a celebratory launch event scheduled for Saturday, April 28. Join in a fun, family-oriented community party, with lucky door prizes including free laundry services and offerings from other local businesses.

The Tuggers Laundromat launch celebration will be held from 10 am to 1 pm, Saturday 28 April at 355/325 Anketell Street, Greenway.

There was/is one in Botany Street Phillip that was/has been operated by a family for long time. It also has a combination of industrial and domestic machines. They do ironing also.

It’s good to see one opening in Greenway though; there more services like this are needed down here.
