Canberra is like that Silent Hill movie

By Barcham - 15 April 2013 9

Nerom Eneas has found the heart of Canberra, which is apparently out the back of the Canberra Centre in Braddon, and is amused to find it empty.

Now come on guys, this is embarrassing. Where were we all that night? Why weren’t any of us hanging out at an intersection behind the mall at 11pm on whatever night this was taken so some guy from Melbourne wouldn’t laugh at us?

This is a dark day for the nation’s capital.

ghosttown

There are times, not all that late at night, when I almost feel as if I am driving on a private road but, as others have, and no doubt will, say, better that than non-stop congestion. If you look carefully (yes, I know) and without the distraction of traffic, some of our seemingly unprepossessing built environment actually takes on a grungy, soulful charm at night.

Yes, sometimes I am driving around late at night and I wonder if there was an evacuation message sent out and I did not get it!

I quite like a moment of quiet solitude in an urban space, especially if it’s a bit misty and I have something ambient in the CD player.

And as enrique points out, the population growth won’t slip into reverse once it goes past your personal comfort zone.

Unless you live in Detroit……..

I for one will vote for any installation of the Silent Hill air raid sirens to spin out the tourists.

People who want 24 hour bustle should go live on top of someone else in Sydney or Bogota. Needing people to rave about the place you call home is an immature adolescent hang-up.

Anyone who has lived in Canberra long enough has witnessed the relentless spread and intensification of Canberra, and knows it won’t stop. You’ll get your bustle soon enough, and all the crap that goes with it.

And as enrique points out, the population growth won’t slip into reverse once it goes past your personal comfort zone.

From the video poster’s comments – “but Canberra is known to get empty even earlier – by 5-6pm”

What a load of good old-fashioned country-style bollocks.

And I agree with enrique, Canberra is just the right ratio of busy/quiet for me. But then, I outgrew the phase of wanting to hang out on street corners in the middle of the night some time ago.

Wait… That didn’t sound right….

Heh heh, one of the reasons I live here.

I’d much prefer empty boring old Canberra streets than rubbish like the following…

Once the city starts getting too busy, there’s no going back – it never gets quiet ever again.
