Canberra Raiders Trevor Thurling Arrested for Drink Driving

By jessieduck - 11 April 2009 8

ABC News is reporting that Canberra Raiders NRL player Trevor Thurling has been stood down by the club after being arrested by police in Sydney on Thursday.

The club says Thurling was involved in an car accident and was driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a statement on the club’s website, Raiders CEO Don Furner said Thurling has been stood down from all playing and club commitments until the matter has been dealt with.

Idiot.

ED – MadJimmy sent this story in as well:

    Another Raider DUI

Another Canberra Raider has been caught drink driving. It has been reported that Trevor Thurling was involved in a car accident last night and police allege he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The club has stood him down until it has been dealt with by the authorities. Shades of Todd Carney all over again.

As did vg:

Trevor Thurling adds himself to the list

[Foxsports] Reports here that Raider Trevor Thurling had added himself to the list of NRL players in strife for matters associated with drinking. Seems the young fella has gotten himself arrested for DUI after a prang in Sydney last night.

The more we’re told things are changing the more they stay the same

What’s Your opinion?

People who drink drive think they are above the law, they have no thought about the other people on the road

Well I hope it does stop at one offense for Thuring. And I guess the Raiders once hoped it would stop at one offense for Carney.

I know that Weyman, Zillman and Costigan all took better offers to play elsewhere. And a lot of the talent developed in Canberra will also do so.

My comment referred to the the length of the injury list and suspended list over the last few years at the Raiders.

Costigan did not leave the Raiders due to alcohol problems, but he did join them after being sacked by the Broncos.
Zillman was a Queenslander who was offered good money by the Titans to return home.
Weyman was a useless turd who had to go. Luckily he went to the best coach in the league and he has turned his career around.

Carney and Goodwin had to be sacked. Thurling went DUI after crashing his car – and will probably get a 4 week internal suspension.

He didn’t assault anyone, he didn’t piss on anyone. This accident has probably cost him $40k and his licence for a year – punishment enough for the offence.

Thurling will probably only be suspended for 2 matches like the guy from the Roosters.

It’s not a contract ending offence, just Strike 1 I’d say.

The Raiders have had their fair share of players who for one reason or other have failed to give value for money. Thurling looked the goods. After Goodwin and Carney’s efforts one might imagine that the level of support and education for these players would have had some effect.

It is galling to see players that the Raiders have put significant effort into now playing for other teams and far more effectively. If Costigan, Zillman and Weyman have good seasons it will leave a sour taste in the mouth. An increasing number of players have spent time at the club when most of the time they have been injured or suspended. Carney, Goodwin and Thurling will probably turn out next year and have good seasons with other clubs.
