Nice work Canberra Times. Reporting on the brawl in the St Edmund’s vs Marist rugby match is one thing…this is another:

Classy. Touting for pics of a schoolboy brawl.

[ED – Can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same thing given the chance, but discuss amongst yourselves]

I have been reported in the CT a few times and the only thing that was truth was my name. That was under editor Michelle Graton who is reputed to be among the best in the job. Nonsense. In fairness to CT, they are no different from any other news provider. Fallible.

Young blokes playing footy? I was suspended twice for fighting when I playing footy. As long as it stays on the field.

Problem here?

I’m making a link with your user name here. Am i wrong to make that connection?

Fights like this make me proud of my public education, my childhood in Western Australia (not rugby country) and my absolute hatrid of all team sports

Everyone is a member of the media today.

There would have been ‘official’ pics being taken by the JRU – and they yet might end up in the Crimes. The other part to the story was the stuff happening in the stands between supporters – friends of ours left due to the language and then throwing of items between the two groups.

It was interesting to note the Referees Manager reckons that the calling off of the match by the official was not on – apparently only the ref can do that once a game has started.

The fight was bad enough for a game to be called off. That’s definitely news.

And having newspapers ask for photos or witnesses isn’t a problem – I’ve seen that question on most Fairfax newsflash stories. I don’t think it’s lazy journalism, it’s clever journalism. People these days are used to instant 24/7 news (ok maybe not in the CT), and if they don’t get that instant photo or story their competitors will.

So should the story then be about an overaction by officials to a common yet undesirable on field incident?
Fights on a footy field are going to happen. Young men, testosterone and all that.

Shock horror – CT bashing! That’s right up there with the “I had to wait 15 minutes for my Decaf Latte this morning” and “Can any one recommend a gentle proctologist?” as RiotAct’s most original thread topic.

Yawn,
how is this news?
There were many fights when I played schoolboy rugby and it never made the news. And guess what? no-one stopped these games and at the end everyone shook hands and that was the end of it.

Clown killer: they’re private schools that provide an education influenced by the Catholic faith, which is distinct from schools that are run by the Catholic Education Office and part of the archdiocese.

Small difference, but a difference none the less – unless of course you disagree with Papists in general.

Lazy Journalism. What happened with getting off their collective butts and getting out there to interview wittiness and so on?

Why go to all that trouble when they can sit in a warm office and make some bullshit assumptions that gullible retards (sic CA readers, TT viewers) will swallow ?

You say lazy, I say effective, witness interviews from these things will be balls. But if you can get a photo? Then you’ve got a front page.

As if it’s even news. So some kids play footy and it gets a bit rough and spills over into some punches. Fun to watch, sure, but hardly news.

I recall a similar all in brawl in 1984 during Marist Vs Wests under 16’s.

I went to Marist but played for Wests at the time which made life interesting for me for a few weeks. The entire Marist team got detention. Of note the 1984 brawl also started in the stands between the parents and flowed onto the fields.

I look forward to hearing where this goes.

Yep, seems to be the case.

I just hope we see the two Principals on the telly slugging it out over who started it, haha!

The whole episode is grist to the mill of the anti-private school brigade

Except neither are private schools – they’re Catholic schools. There’s a BIG diference.

I hear they sold some copies of the video at the stadium…bet they’re worth more now!!…I’m sure the schools will deal with them much stronger then the ACTJRU will ! Wonder if the 3rd place team will now receive the trophy as they played the game/season in the spirit it was suppossed to be played in?…But back to the question…I think it’s standard these days to ask for private footage?

The whole episode is grist to the mill of the anti-private school brigade. CT probably figures they can sell a few more papers if they can get “exclusive” pics of the stink.

I think they do this kind of thing in all news services these days – even the BBC.

Too testosterone in one place at one time. We had something like this between guvvie schools way-back-when-I-were-a-lad. One of the boys involved was the school captain, so the headmaster ‘sacked’ him from the position.

The local rag, I might add, didn’t go around begging for pics. I wouldn’t even know if it got a mention.
