Canberra’s Best Photographers

1

It seems like everyone is a photographer these days. Before the advent of digital photography, it was a learned trade that professionals spent years practicing. That is not the case anymore. All a person has to do now is buy a high-end camera, snap a couple of pictures and then start advertising themselves to potential clients.

However, this doesn’t apply to everyone. There are still plenty of qualified photographers in Canberra if you are willing to look. When you are conducting the search, there are three things to look for.

  • Awards/qualifications – A good photographer doesn’t necessarily need to have studied the craft at university. But, you might want to see if they are accredited by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), the country’s leading photography organisation. You can also ask if they have won or been nominated for any awards such as an Australian Professional Photography Award. These show they are committed to their field and not simply trying to make a few dollars pursuing a hobby.
  • Areas of expertise – A photographer who is excellent at weddings might not be as skilled taking portraits and an event photographer may struggle to get good nature shots. Always ask the photographer for examples of work that relates to the occasion you are hiring them for.
  • Creativity – This characteristic can be difficult to measure, but the most obvious way for you to notice this is at a consultation. During the meeting, see if the photographer offers feedback or makes suggestions. You want someone who uses their experience and knowledge to improve your ideas instead of only taking direction.

We work with Ben and the team constantly and have never been anything but happily surprised by the quality and professionalism that is delivered! Definitely recommend!”.

There are many photographers in Canberra. Some good and some not. There is a huge difference between the person that can afford a high end DSLR and starts marketing as a photographer, and one that has been honing their craft since the print days.

It is important to remember, that the concept and many of the techniques used in digital photography are actually carried on from the print days. Dodging and burning, the RAW (negative in print days) and the jpg (the printed product). The way you treat your image and think about composition is not something just any-one with a camera can do.

Looking for professional experience and awards is important when looking for a photographer that knows what they are doing. One like Emily Hanna at https://www.eshphotography.com.au
