Election fever might be rising to the fore in the lead up to the May 18 vote but organisers of the Canberra Wool Expo on that same weekend are confident that the real winter chill hitting the air will draw the crowds to their event.

Their goal is to make the two-day Expo the biggest wool event in the region and while the nation’s politicians may be known for spinning a yarn, the Expo is promising the real deal.

To be held at the Old Bus Depot Markets on both the Saturday and Sunday, the Canberra Wool Expo promises to bring together the region’s best quality wool products and producers and will also offer a wide range of makers’ workshops.

“Canberra Wool Expo will be filled with some of Australia’s best wool producers and is a great opportunity for visitors to our popular market to meet these talented craftspeople,” said Old Bus Depot Markets Director, Anthony Niravong.

“In 2019 Canberra Wool Expo will also host the highest number of wool workshops we have ever had for a single event. Our specialist workshops, open for bookings from the public, are taught by textile professionals with a variety of expertise and techniques.

“Stallholders will showcase some of the best quality wool products you’ll find in the country.

“Visitors can expect to see a vast array of luxury and specialist yarns including those that have been hand-spun and hand dyed. Tools, accessories and clothing will also be in abundance,” said Mr Niravong.

Makers’ workshops will include Macrame with Annette Boyd, Crocheted with Love by Frances Carleton and knitting and Wool Combing with Julie Hofer.

There’s also rug punch embroidery, wet felt and needle felting, quilting and weaving, with options from beginners to experienced hobbyists.

Among the wool producers at the Expo will be Blackwattle Alpaca Yarn and Fibre with their high-quality alpaca yarn, Camelot Mohair with their sheep’s wool and Belisa Cashmere with their popular goat’s wool.

Canberra Wool Expo takes place at Canberra’s Old Bus Depot Markets on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May from 10 am to 4 pm and is a free event.

Makers’ Workshops are ticketed events, and places are strictly limited. For more information and to book workshops, visit www.canberrawoolexpo.com.au.
