A car fire sparked a blaze that spread to cover 2.5 hectares in east Canberra on the weekend.
Police are now calling for information and witnesses to Sunday’s fire (24 August) to come forward.
ACT Fire & Rescue were told a car was on fire on Mountain Road in Beard, directly behind an electrical substation and solar battery storage facility, at around 4 pm that afternoon, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
Police were asked to attend to help with the possible evacuation of several horses from a neighbouring paddock.
“Fortunately, the fire was contained to the vehicle and a grassed area of approximately 2.5 hectares,” the police spokesperson said.
Police believe the burnt-out car was most likely a Kia Sportage, but have not been able to confirm an engine or chassis number due to the extensive fire damage.
“Currently, police do not have related reports of a stolen Kia Sportage in ACT or surrounding NSW Police districts,” the police spokesperson said.
“The vehicle was stuck in tall grass on the edge of Mountain Road, and it is possible the vehicle’s exhaust caused the fire under the car which engulfed it.”

Police urged anyone who may have witnessed the fire, have information about its cause, or have dash-cam footage to come forward.
