Police are calling for information and footage after a car was possibly deliberately set on fire in an underground car park next to a supermarket in southern Canberra.

The car had been on fire in the car park on Steve Irwin Avenue in Wright, next to the suburb’s metro Woolworths, on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve (31 December 2024).

ACT Fire & Rescue and police arrived at the scene at about 2:30 pm.

“The car, a blue Mazda 3, is believed to have been deliberately set on fire,” an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

“Witnesses reported seeing two young males, one who was wearing a white shirt and the other who was riding a scooter, fleeing the scene towards Gornall Street, Wright.”
