Canberra has a wonderful burgeoning wine scene and kicking off on Saturday 21st of July the NewActon Precinct is launching a new weekly wine market called ‘Cellar Door’. This will make it easier to meet the regions top winemakers, taste their wares and purchase a bottle or two without having to travel far to each of the wineries.

Presented in collaboration with Canberra Wines, in the iconic and beautiful Nishi Grand stairway every week from 2 – 5 pm each Saturday there will be a rotating roster of the region’s makers and purveyors of wine and other fine goods to enjoy.

Michael Liu, the Dionysus Media and Events Strategist responsible for all the fun and quirky happenings in NewActon, said “In 2017, Canberra District Wine Association approached NewActon to host the launch of Canberra Wine Week with a big tasting event in the A.Baker courtyard. It was a huge success and everyone loved being able to access the region’s winemakers and their wines all in one spot – not to mention the great soul vinyl DJs and the iconic location! Moving forward, we continued holding these tasting events every few months and they continued to grow. We realised that there was a real passion and demand for the region’s produce and so Cellar Door was born – a weekly market showcasing a rotating roster of Canberra region wineries, regularly joined by other purveyors of goods such as chocolate, books, arts and crafts and more. Best of all, it’s in one of Canberra’s most iconic locations – Nishi Grand Stair – and will be perfectly complemented by classic soul vinyl courtesy of DJs from Capital City Soul Club.”

All vendors are proudly from the Canberra region.

“All our vendors are proudly from the Canberra region. Canberra District Wine Association curates the presenting wineries each week, while a variety of other producers and makers are also given the opportunity to join the market.”

As for Michael’s top tips to enjoy the market, he suggests “Grab a souvenir tasting glass to try all the wines that are available before settling on a glass, or dive right in and buy a bottle (or 6!) to enjoy on the spot in NewActon or at home – we have both an on and off-premise liquor licence. There’s nothing better than stocking up the home cellar with distinctly Canberra wines or turning up to the next dinner party with a rare local drop. Of course, there’s Palace Cinema next door and a number of food and drink destinations in the precinct so it’s a great opportunity to make a day of it!”

For the launch event on Saturday the 21st of July, a great variety of wines will be showcased. Idyllic Hills Wines, Fourwinds Vineyard, Gundog Estate, Sholto Wines, Lerida Estate and Contentious Character will all be present for a good afternoon.

Contentious Character will all be present for an afternoon of tastings.

Tony Mansfield from Wamboin’s Contentious Character Vineyard and Winery said, “New Acton is always a great day as we find people are seriously interested in wines and out to enjoy. We’ll be showcasing our newly released 2015 Merlot, 2015 Pinot Noir, 2017 Riesling and 2015 Wooded Pinot Gris.”

Cellar Door is on every Saturday from the 21st of July in the Nishi Grand Stair, NewActon from 2 – 5 pm.
