Cold Rock coming to Canberra

johnboy 25 November 2010 34

Women of my acquaintance are getting quite excited that the Cold Rock ice creamery is coming to Canberra, in particular Gungahlin.

It’s going to be on Hibberson street and if you want a job they’re hiring, email gungahlin@coldrock.com.au

The Great Australian Ice Creamery in Weston went strongly for years. They had that good combo of really interesting Sundaes, and Australian-ised Mexican food. I certainly went there in Winter, I don’t see ice cream as seasonal but many do.

The Ice Creamery kept going for years after ours had gone… there was one in Cooma, not sure if it’s still there. Not sure if the franchise kept going or they just kept the name and continued as a private business.

As for Cold Rock, I imagine they’ve done their research, but opening somewhere a bit more lively might be a better idea.

Obviously you guys are either too young, or not longer term Canberrans to remember ‘The Great Australian Ice-Creamy’

There was one in Belconnen and other on the southside I think, closed down back in the late 80s from memory.

I remember The Great Australian Ice Creamery in Belconnen, it was next to Big B Bicycles. I went to many a birthday party there in the early 90’s, and don’t remember the ice cream at all!

While up in Queensland last month, we spotted a Great Australian Ice Creamery in Townsville. The memories came flooding back… but it was raining so we kept walking til we found a pub. Beer + rain is much nicer than ice cream + rain.

Given up on Goodberry’s.
Last two times it has been melted as soon as we received it. Hopefully cold rock will be better.

My experience too. I remember when they used to serve it to you upside down and you could still tip it upside down when you got home.

These days it’s more akin to a milkshake after 5 minutes than frozen custard.

You clearly don’t mind pigfat “ice lard” then – the stuff that melts is the real icecream.

Also, that’s crap about Canberra only being warm for 3 months of the year!

Been here almost 30 years, and although winter/early spring can be cold, rest of the year is pretty good.

The other one was in Weston. And yes, it’s warm in Canberra for a lot longer than 3 months a year.

It would be nice to finally eat decent ice cream in the Coles tearoom, especially as our air-con doesn’t work properly

I am an equal opportunity ice cream eater – I love goodberrys, but I also love cold rock for the slightly different offerings – it will be good to have it so close – I won’t have to wait for a trip to Sydney any more! any word on when Erindale is opening?

We had it pretty regularly when there was only 2 or 3 stores up in QLD back in the day and it was great. Had some again on the Gold Coast when I lived there about 2 years ago. If I recall correctly it was about $8.00 (starting with one add in) for a small cup. Tasty, but vastly overpriced

i’m excited! pity its in the bandlands….

have any of you been to goodberry’s in the winter? its still pretty busy. i’m sure they make up for it in the summertime anyway, its constantly full.

having a cold rock and goodberrys at erindale should be interesting…

Profiting off the suffering of farmers? No thanks. I walk past that very place on the way to my car each night after work, and never walk in. Stuff ’em.

Fight the power!

I’ll eat ice cream during the winter – when it comes out of a tub in the freezer at home, so I can enjoy it in my nicely gas heated lounge room.

Tell that to all those people I saw boarding a flight with stacks of Krispy Kreme cartons as hand luggage.

BTW here is the ABC Unleashed article: http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/40808.html

I just love how all the serial knockers and w**kers come out of the woodwork with anything posted on this site.

Back on topic – I can’t wait for the opening on Saturday!

I have a friend who ran a Wendy’s for some time and I can assure you selling ice cream is all about the weather.

On a cold day you can sell literally none and on a hot day you can’t keep up.

trevar trevar 2:38 pm 25 Nov 10

What sort of nincumpoop only eats ice cream when it’s cold outside? The temperature in my office is 22 degrees 12 months of the year. Bring the Cold Rock to Deakin!

And balls to those snooty varmints who don’t eat ice cream in winter. You’re snobs and not worthy of this great continent.
