Damned if You Don’t

The ABC have this story on Conservationists complaining that the decision to NOT conduct a roo cull will be detrimental to other flora and fauna on Defence sites at Belconnen and Majura due to overgrazing by the overlarge roo population.

I think the roos will probably win out as they are more cute and cuddly than lizards.

The roos, cute as they are, do have to go.
It’s because of humans that they’re in plague proportions – we’ve cleared the woodlands that used to cover the ACT, creating much more grassland than there used to be, and increasing roo numbers immensely. Their numbers, and the amount that they eat, are now starting to put other native species in danger. Gotta get the balance back I reckon.

recently the government dug out new roads around the fence and mowed almost every inch of the paddock.
i think they wanna build that new suburb on it soon.
Does anyone else remember them mowing this?

Put simply, any monoculture, read roos, is bad for an ecosystem.

The roos are simply eating the environment. The sun moth which lives and breeds in certain grasses there can now no longer breed as the roos have eaten it all. The cute little earless dragons, that eat the moth and other insects, no longer has food, etc tec.

it’s all that primary school food chain peoples.

Sadly, the roos have to go.

And in the most humane way possible.

The roos are in plague proportions, and a humane cull would prevent death by starvation for the roos.

I don’t want a bucketload of my tax dollars wasted on transferring the pests elsewhere – we should be looking at a practical and economically reasonable solution.

Contract shooters in the do the job properly, relatively cheaply, sell the pelts, carcasses etc, and make it a zero cost exercise.

Before any bleeding heart goes waah at me, how many roos do you see dead on the side of the road? There isn’t a shortage of the animals – this cull would be an absolutely minuscule percentage of the Australian population.
