Dead Palm Trees at Belco Pool

By bonfire 5 April 2005 1

A friend reckons he saw someone painting the palm leaves at the Belco swimming pool. While driving past it yesterday in the Stanely Steamer I had a look and a few of the trees appear to be dead, but i couldnt see any evidence of painted leaves or plastic trees.

Any greenthumbs care to comment ? I always thought it was NUTS to plant palm trees there in the first place.

They are date palms. And due to the water restrictions they have suffered stress and passed on. Or seeing they were planted during the later works to the car park, the soil around them was compacted and due to the fact that they prefer a loose free slowing soil, they couldn’t survive in the conditions.

It was a wierd choice of tree for the location, but they have survived in worse places. Just bad luck for all concerned I would say. They might come back next summer, if this winter isnt too tough on them.
