As the temperature takes a sudden nosedive in Canberra, have you found yourself literally left out in the cold and unprepared with your autumn and winter wardrobe? I have!
As part of Canberra Centre’s autumn/winter masterclass series, Canberra Centre’s stylist Fiona Keary will be holding a Five-Step Style Transformation Workshop on Sunday 20 May.
As a leading local style guru with years of experience in personal styling, she will be sharing her five-step styling tips to building a polished seasonal look. Ahead of the upcoming class, I got to quiz Fiona about her background, the workshop and how to dress in the cold weather we experience here in the capital.
What is your background?
I was an accountant who loved fashion (and shopping) but had no idea! After going through my own style transformation and learning that putting together a wardrobe full of pieces that you love is as simple as following 5 steps, I decided to change careers and start teaching others how to do it too.
What can attendees expect at the Five-Step Style Transformation Workshop?
Attendees will discover that there are 5 steps to creating a wardrobe full of pieces that they love. They’ll learn that you don’t need to be born with an innate sense of style to put together great looks. It’s about:
- identifying your style personality;
- knowing which colour palette to work with;
- understanding your body architecture;
- getting back to basics and investing in core pieces that mix and match with everything else; and
- knowing where to shop based on the above.
What are your favourite things about autumn/winter fashion?
I love layering lots of different textures such as wool, leather, velvets and tweeds. I love wearing a statement coat and a great pair of boots. That’s what’s so great about Canberra – we get all the seasons and therefore get to wear a variety of things.
What is the biggest mistake people make when it comes to their autumn/winter wardrobe?
Not investing in the basics. I know that finding great fitting pants, jeans, skirts and jackets can feel like a chore but they are the pieces that work hardest in your wardrobe. Once you have them, it’s like set and forget until you need to replace them.
What are some of your favourite retailers currently at the Canberra Centre for autumn/winter fashion and why?
For leather pieces I love Husk. Their soft leather jackets, pants, shoes and bags come in great neutral and earthy tones. The quality is superb.
I’m obsessed with the Karlie Cardigan at Saba. It’s one of their signature pieces and I take every client to try one on. It’s one of those pieces that easily transition from casual to work, so extremely versatile.
I also love the Ponte Pants at Sportscraft. Again a staple piece that comes in black, navy and charcoal. They are super comfortable and look sharp. Wear them with ankle boots and an oversized knit for the weekend or a blouse and heels for work.
