A black Mitsubishi crashed into the fence of the Sri Lankan High Commission at Yarralumla in the early hours of this morning (13 April) after being spotted by police travelling at high speeds.

An ACT Policing patrol car spotted the car on Yarra Glen at 1:10 am, and the car was last seen to have taken the exit ramp towards Hopetoun Circuit.

Officers later found the car after it had crashed. The driver was apprehended at the scene. The driver will receive infringement notices for speeding, stopping in an intersection, using an unregistered or suspended vehicle and using an uninsured vehicle.

According to police, the driver holds a provisional licence.

A police spokesperson added that, at present, the speed of the vehicle cannot be confirmed; however the speed limit on Yarra Glen/Adelaide Avenue is 80 km/h and the vehicle was travelling in excess of that. An investigation into the collision will be undertaken.

Two other people in the car fled the scene on foot, but both later spoke to police and will not be charged.
