EPIRB/PLB hire in Canberra

By Vonbare - 14 September 2010 11

Hi,

Does anyone know where in Canberra I can hire an EPRIB or PLB from for the weekend?

I’ve rung quite a few places, but the only spots I’ve been able to find are the ANU mountaineering club (who only hire to members) and the NSW Nat Park service (who are based in Jindabyne or Tumut and not near where we are hiking).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks

VB

Namadgi Visitor’s Centre hire them out at a very reasonable rate: http://www.tams.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/229222/PERSONAL_LOCATOR_BEACON_QA.pdf

Ah thanks for that, I’ll keep it in mind.. I followed Noezis advice above and went to Realfun, they even threw in a UHF radio which is very kind of them. Very reasonable rate. Hopefully my wife will worry a little less now, with snow forecast up the top.. Great advice though..

Eventually I’ll buy my own EPIRB and get a SPOT too

Seems like there would be a market for this that camping/outdoor stores should exploit.

Last time I hired one from National Parks (Jindabyne) – but was able to get it sent to the Queanbeyan depot/office and return it to same place. That was many years ago however.

Last I heard, ACT Scouts had a couple, and you *might* be able to hire them – though, obviously Scouters would have dibs on any given weekend…

These guys will ship a unit express post and organise to have it registered with AusSAR.

If you are hiring or buying make sure you get one that is capable of accurately locating your position (sub-100m accuracy). There are products on the market that may only be accurate to between 1-3km (unsurprisingly they are much cheaper). In my book, if your at the ppoint when you’re considering pulling the tab off and pressing the button, you dont want the people coming to the resuce having any trouble in finding you.

x eleventybillion!

Especially useful in the mountainous terrain found around Canberra.

Not 100% sure, but in the old days we used to hire some of that stuff from Watts communications on Kembla St in fyshwick. We’d never hired epirbs as such, but had hired CB radios and associated equipment for mountain trips, at quite affordable prices.

Since they sell CBs and PLBs, Id think theyd hire the PLBs too. Theyd at least be able to point you in the right direction.

Could be a good use for left over crackers!
