This series takes us on a playful and curious journey; exploring abstraction, repeat pattern, the spiritual, the botanical, combining text and imagery for layered storytelling, and contemporary portraiture. This series wanders and dances through the last 200 years of dynamic art practice where you’ll use a variety of mediums, from charcoal, watercolour, acrylic paint, collage and more.
In the first two weeks, begin the series by exploring line, rhythm, colour and pattern to create an abstract artwork. We will analyse two different contemporary artists Bridgid Riley and Sean Scully. Be inspired by the clean lines and contrasting colour palette of Bridgid Riley’s paintings – creating optical tension and contrast that with Sean Scully’s loose and layered brushy approach.
In week 3, venture back in time and be stirred by William Morris’s interlacing compositions. Using botanical plants and natural motifs as inspiration we will create a repeat pattern composition that is elegant, detailed and curvy.
Week 4 will see participants draw upon the spiritual space and power of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings- we will examine her unique structured style and colour palette as she blends abstraction with realism!
In week 5, examine the mark making of Vernon Ar Kee’s portraits. They are captivating. This week will be spent drawing a portrait of a loved one.
William Yang is a wonderful photographer who writes personal stories and reflections on his photographs. In our last week we will create an artwork that layers words, poems, stories and will explore various ways to integrate them with our image/ drawing or painting!
About The Artist
Blaide Lallemand takes an interdisciplinary approach to making works of art, fusing her interest in sculptural practices with a range of ephemeral practices including performance, new media and site-specific installation. Blaide is interested in immersing the audience into the artwork, enabling them to have a visceral experience and choice to actively participate with the realization and evolution of the artwork.
Blaide studied acting at the University of Western Sydney before graduating from the ANU School of Art with first class Honours in 2003. She is interested in exploring cycles in nature, rhythms of the body and aspects of intimate social and physical relationships between people and their complex means of communication.
