Root to Leaf is a six-week art course based on the art, science and wonder of botany. From week-to-week participants will explore the physiology and function of various botanical elements and discover how this translates to art. The class will be led by visual artist, Gina Chapman, who is also trained in Conservation, Land Management and Horticulture. Each class will offer the opportunity to focus on a different topic, allowing students to develop their knowledge and skills over the six-week period.
A variety of exotic and native plants will be explored, including their anatomy, function and reproductive cycles. A range of media will be available for use such as charcoal, water colour and graphite – giving participants the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the study of botanical form. Prior training or knowledge in either field of botanical studies or drawing is not necessary – just the interest and desire to explore the beauty of nature.
Gina Chapman joined the TAC team in 2022, assisting Messengers classes and working on events. She is a graduate of the ANU School of Art, winning the BCC Patron Award for her graduating work. She has gone on to study Conservation and Land Management and Horticulture. Gina currently leads the Seniors and Carers classes as well as the ‘Root to Leaf’ workshop. She is passionate about environmental issues, conservation and the intersection with visual arts.
