Canberra Muslim communities are preparing for Ramadan, starting on 2 April until 1 May 2022, the month of Ramadan (named after the ninth month in the Islamic calendar) is a month of fasting. Adults and young adults from the age of puberty who are in good health are expected to fast. Starts from just before the sun rises to when the sun sets, fasting means ‘nil by mouth’, no food or water is allowed. However, when the sun sets the feasting starts. More importantly the spiritual part increases manyfold day and night.
The very popular radio broadcast run by Diana Abdel-Rahman, OAM, President of Australian Muslim Voice is an anticipated part of Ramadan in Canberra. Running for over 20 years, Radio Ramadan broadcasts for one month on 99.5FM and streaming online at www.amv.org.au. Setup in her home, she brings together an interesting selection of topics including talks and presentations and interviews covering theology, history and topics of interest to the community and music from around the world.
On Sunday 8 May the Canberra Eid al-Fitr Festival will be held at the Canberra Islamic Centre in Monash. The festival is geared around children with amusement rides, pony rides plus lots of multicultural food stalls, henna hand painting, face painting and entertainment. Everyone in Canberra is invited and welcomed to attend. Happy Ramadan!
