You’re seven years old. Mum’s in hospital. Dad says she’s ‘done something stupid’. She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything that’s worth living for.

Decades pass, the list grows, and what started as a naïve way of getting through the day eventually becomes a profound truth – that the sublime can be found in the everyday.

ACT Hub are thrilled to present the ACT Premiere of Duncan Macmillan’s “beautiful, heart-wrenching and very funny” (Timeout) play about the lengths we go to for the ones we love, and how sometimes the only way we can help ourselves is by helping others: Every Brilliant Thing.
Following critically acclaimed seasons of Hay Fever at ACT Hub and King Lear at The Q, director Joel Horwood returns with this extraordinary one-man show. Every Brilliant Thing is a pure celebration of life that reminds us to pay attention to life’s smallest joys – and to each other.
In a thrilling role reversal, Joel finally has the chance to direct his friend and frequent collaborator, Jarrad West, who has previously directed him in Holding the Man, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Queers.
Joel says ‘Jarrad is an actor’s director, a leader with profound instincts and understanding of creating experiences for an audience. I can’t wait to witness the humanity and humour he brings to Every Brilliant Thing, and to share this unique work with our community.’
