Baz Luhrmann helped adapt this classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy for the screen, updating the setting to a modern city named Verona Beach. In this version, the Capulets and the Montagues are two rival gangs.

Juliet (Claire Danes) is attending a costume ball thrown by her parents. Her father (Paul Sorvino) has arranged her marriage to the boorish Paris (Paul Rudd) as part of a strategic investment plan. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) attends the masked ball and he and Juliet fall in love.

While their families conspire to tear these star-crossed lovers apart, Romeo and Juliet will fight to hold on to each other, even if it ends up costing them their lives.

Don’t forget to come to the Australians & Hollywood exhibition before the film to see the Romeo + Juliet art concept books made by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, and to celebrate the stories and people behind our films.

‘Luhrmann’s gleefully cinematic version of the play is so relentlessly inventive and innovative, it takes 20 minutes to get a grasp on how appropriate is his approach to the material’ – Time Out

This title is held in the NFSA collection.
