Stronger than Fiction, Canberra’s very own documentary film festival is back for 2021, but in a totally new format.
The first film screened will be Oscar-nominated The Mole Agent, a story of geriatric gumshoe who is hired by a private detective agency with a mission to infiltrate a nursing home.
Rumours of abuse and neglect in a Chilean nursing home prompt a private investigation agency to hire eighty-something Sergio as an inside agent.
After admitting himself to the home, Sergio must deal with technologically complicated spy gadgets, his daughter’s reservations about his new career, and the persistent advances of several female residents who are quick to notice the dapper “younger” man. But as his investigation deepens, Sergio realises that the story he is uncovering is much bigger than he thought.
Known in the national and international festival landscape for the excellence of its programming, Stronger than Fiction is curated by passionate filmmakers, the festival has grown steadily since 2013, except for 2020, when, along with many other film festivals, Stronger than Fiction was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Rather than a two-week event, different films will be screened monthly. However, the festival promises its usual atmosphere, Q&As with directors as well as local musicians set to perform. There will also be opportunities to meet new people and discuss the film in a social setting.
