The Jazz Haus Canberra and Tuggeranong Arts Centre are delighted to present one of Australia’s most accomplished yet hidden vocal talents, Jamaican singer Pat Powell. Described as the artist that everyone wants to work with, and a singer’s singer, Pat is currently a member of some 15 bands – including the ARIA award-winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra.
For his Tuggeranong concert Pat will be joined by bassist Nick Hoorweg, drummer Colin Hoorweg and pianist Damien Slingsby. Pat will perform a carefully crafted set of Jazz, Soul, Funk and Blues. Check out this fabulous short film by filmmaker Fiona Cochrane (Strange Tenants: Ska’d For Life) who got behind the man and his music, to craft a personalised portrait of Pat Powell’s life and loves.
Pat will also be offer a vocal workshop exploring contemporary vocal stylings. Open to all singers, The Black Music Sung with Edge and Feeling, not Pop workshop is a wonderful opportunity to explore Soul, R&B and Jazz styles in a contemporary music context. This practical group masterclass will focus on improvisation and interpretation.
