The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, 1965)

G | 170 Mins | 1965 | 35mm | US | D: Robert Wise

Winner of no fewer than five Oscars, this cherished family classic stars Julie Andrews as Maria, a hapless yet charmingly earnest nun who becomes governess to the seven Von Trapp children. As the Second World War looms, Maria brings much-needed joy and music to the household, gradually winning over the children’s hearts – and audiences throughout the decades.

Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music features many beloved musical numbers including ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’ and ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen.’

‘…will be one of the movies’ all-time hits, one of the all-time great pictures. It restores your faith in movies.’ – The Hollywood Reporter (1965)

Presented on 35mm film prints from the NFSA collection.
