Motorists using the Tuggeranong Parkway can expect delays over the next couple of months with work starting on Wednesday (24 March) to upgrade road barriers.

Transport Canberra and City Services says the work will require lanes to be closed to allow crews to carry out the work, from the Glenloch Interchange through to Sulwood Drive, Kambah.

Both directions will be affected and speed limits will be reduced to ensure the safety of workers and motorists.

One lane will remain open in each direction at all times to allow traffic to travel through and the work will be done outside of peak hours, from 9:30 am to 4 pm.

The upgrades are due to be completed by 18 May.

The Tuggeranong Parkway is one of Canberra’s busiest roads, and is often brought to a standstill by collisions in both directions, especially between the Glenloch Interchange and the Cotter Road ramps.

That particular stretch is set to be the ACT’s first smart road, with the installation of a variable speed limit system using traffic detection, CCTV and other technologies to determine and display speed limits appropriate for road and weather conditions and traffic volumes.

The government expects to sign a contract soon, with work underway from April to July followed by testing and commissioning.

The system should be operating by the end of the year.

Tuggeranong Parkway carries about 35,000 vehicles per day, with about 3,500 to 4,000 vehicles in peak hour traffic.

What fool still thinks ‘ Canberra’s roads are gold plated compared to interstate’. We’ve effectively had a local council since 1989 along with its lack of commonwealth budget.

We have also seen a massive increase in the population of Canberra since 1989 too.

The roads are far busier, and have gridlocks now during peak hour.

I just wonder how you upgrade a solid cement barrier with a 10,000 year lifespan?

Maybe installing the latest Intel chip?

I’d be adding a transit lane for public transport and emergency vehicles to the Parkway or simplifying the Glenloch interchange as a higher priority.

“Smart” speed cameras to go with the “smart” speed limit signs?

Sounds like an excellent revenue-raising opportunity for the ACT Government – but as the law and order astroturfers will be quick to point out, if you’re not do anything “wrong”, you’ve got nothing to worry about…..
