Free Civic Parking - but for how long?

This morning I went to park in the $7.50 per day carpark that was recently sold for $90+ million. It is located on London Crt opposite the new NICTA building and the Lakeside hotel.

The great/scary thing was that all the ticket machines had been removed as well as all the signs indicating that you have to pay.

After a call to the toy government we were informed that the space – as of today – is no longer owned by the ACT and therefore they can’t charge for parking. Woo Hoo!

We are now running a sweep on when temporary fences go up and the whole carpark is closed…(or when the new owners set up a payment system until they begin construction).

A few years back, that big space between the Lakeside and where Civic begins was a giant free carpark. It was meant to be a building site, but until they moved in with the fences one dark day, it was free if you got in early enough.

I won’t accept jobs that are located in Civic, as it’s effectively a $50/week pay cut. Sometimes that backfires though, as they offer to stick an extra 50 a week on to pay for parking.

The lack of warning is hardly surprising – after all, it only affects members of the public, many of whom are Commonwealth public servants, with not so many ACT officials on that side. When one sells a carpark where hundreds park, and replaces it, as will happen soon, with office/commercial buildings which will create a demand for hundreds more spaces, one has to expect that there will be people who will lose their convenient spots. And some of them might take to the buses, creating a few more employment opportunities for the TWU. So it’s a win/win, at least until election time.

But I’m sure the ACT Assembly members would be happy to let you use their carpark, at the price they don’t pay. Perhaps someone with more money and time than sense could run a “Chaser-style stunt” to test this out.

Dave F – go to the Dicko motor Registry and get a refund….I am. And don’t let them give you this “it will take 4 weeks business” – demand it be directly deposited to your accoint in days.

Stereo henry – the same number of parks may be under the new building but they won’t be available to the public – only to the extra 4000 people who will be working there….

will the new building have the same amount of PUBLIC carparks once completed? this is something they are doing in SE QLD and it seems to be taking some of the pressure off parking in CBDs.

I just finished putting up the signs an hour ago. You’ve got at least 12 months left.

It’d be nice if they gave some warning as to when this would happen. I have 3 1/2 weeks left on a monthly ticket.

So, who won the sweep?

Good things never last. *sigh*

Yep – we have just been informed of the new price. Servicing a $91 million debt isn’t cheap!

Don’t tell anyone but there’s free parking on the futsal field for the time being.

You just have to walk across a bridge to get it :!D

Apparently machines have already gone in with new signs to go up tonight. Tip is $8/day.
