Antoinette Karsten’s Free Spirit exhibition will officially open on Saturday 18 July at Tuggeranong Arts Centre.
Free Spirit is a mixed media celebration of life joys through the eyes of Lulu – the main character in this collection.
Lulu is a whimsical little figure dedicated to making the world a happier place.
She can be lighthearted and soulful, contemplative and mysterious, but she is always able to find the magic in everyday things. She lives her dreams fearlessly and encourages us to follow ours.
Karsten describes Lulu as an auto-biographical response to her love of travel, nature and adventure, of silence and music, and of living authentically.
“Lulu is where the spiritual and the ordinary meet, where life is treasured and celebrated, and where we are all free to sing our heart song.
This series of mixed media paintings are intuitively layered with old dressmaking patterns from my childhood, sheet music with unique stories and hand-carved block stamps from India. These elements add layers of personal significance,” Antoinette Karsten said.
Free Spirit is Lulu’s second emergence into the world. She was introduced to audiences in Antoinette’s first solo exhibition in 2014.
After studying music, and through various careers as a sign writer and graphic artist, yoga teacher and blacksmith, Karsten has settled comfortably into an art practice which embraces teaching as well.
