Good Canberra Hairdressers / Barbershops

By jamius maximus - 17 March 2006 19

Jamius, intellectual heavyweight, bringing you all the hard-hitting issues.

Question: What hairdressers / barbershops in Canberra do you rate?

(I got this idea from the Vicki Dunn thread, where Kerces bumped into Vicki and this slick-looking joint).

I have recently been floating around between a few places and I think I have settled on the joint next to King O’Mally’s – Martinos – as I have had two good cuts in a row, reasonable prices and you don’t have to make an appointment. But always open to suggestion.

Extra points if the cut price is under $30.

What’s Your opinion?

FFS what are you digging up this old sh!t for! Honestly. get yourself a set of clippers – decent ones will cost you about $40 from Myers. A number one clip is easy as piss as, looks neat and saves you ever going to a barbers again.

So for the cheapest $12 one, anyone know if it’s open to public? Also, the “Joe Sorrentino (was at Pearce shops for years, moved to Mawson sometime in the 90s). 1980s decor, 1980s”, what are 80’s prices?

Contact numbers for both would be greatly appreciated.

adfa have a cheap barber. 12 bucks from memory, but selection is limited.

Charnwood Snippets is fine by me. I can ring them at lunch and get in at 4.30.

Admittedly, cutting my hair is little more than shearing me….

Hair Spectrum, belco mall. 25 bucks for a head shearing. sweet.

I concur with el re Roger David – no fuss & easy to get a time. Has the added bonus of being open for part of Saturday afternoon, which earns extra points with me.

Martino’s is also good – a good haircut as well as a good location. I see they now offer massages as well, which is a bit weird, but apparently above board (& absolutely no inappropriate innuendo intended).

I do not recommend the Akuna St arcade place referred to by terubo. Had a haircut there once, which was honderous and lopsided, and will never go back.

Canberra seems to be a very hard place to find a cheap hair cut for blokes. I often get a haircut if I’m interstate just because its cheaper.

I’ve had pretty decent cuts at Roger David @ Woden Plaza. They’re $22 from memory.

Go and see Kerry at the Mawson shops, top corner facing the carpark. $18 and no coffee. BYO beer only.

Jan at Innovative Hair on Northbourne is excellent. Not under $30, but she does a great job, is funny, and the coffee hits the spot.

Down in the Valley (does that still count as Canberra?) behind the Sportmans World in Tuggeranong Home World next to the Bike Shop – no appointment needed, affordable (under $20) and a couple of good sorts to cut your hair if you don’t get the main man (who’s name I can’t remember)…oh and a couple of decent pics on the wall if you like your cars.

George at Shapes in Civic (upstairs from the Academy and Milk and Honey) used to do “2 for $10” (that is a number 2 comb for $10)

So long as you don’t mind him expousing the virtues of Essendon it is a pleasant experience.

Dom’s in Dickson of a saturday morning.

Come in, sit down, wait your turn, talk about cars and fishing.

Well under $30 (more like $20 IIRC)

To kick it old school you can’t go past Joe Sorrentino (was at Pearce shops for years, moved to Mawson sometime in the 90s). 1980s decor, 1980s prices and Batman comics to browse as you wait…

terubo 4:25 pm 17 Mar 06

Big Jim, nice little place in an arcade facing Akuna St (I think). Run by Philip and his sidekick. $19 until recently, I gather it’s gone up to around $22 this year. Probably because you can occasionally glimpse the Chief Mimicker scoffing a sandwich at the cafe opposite….

ive been using martinos for years, but they seem recently to have employed a hairdresser, and i prefer a barber.

no way im letting a ‘hairdresser’ near my giant square head.
