Canberra’s Melanie Poole is the Anne Wexler Australian-American Studies Scholar in Public Policy for 2013, which is a pretty awesome thing and kind of a big deal. Congratulations Melanie!

Ms Melanie Poole, Parliamentary Advocacy Co-ordinator, with CARE Australia will spend two years in the United States to undertake a Masters in Public Policy. Melanie’s work is in the area of humanitarian advocacy and global development, with a strong focus on promoting the rights of women and girls.

“Australia is one of the most prosperous, peaceful, democratic nations in the world. We are a good global citizen that makes many contributions through our aid and diplomacy programs, which we can be proud of, but there is more that we can do,” Melanie said.

By studying public policy in the U.S., Melanie will learn how to engage a broader range of sectors in the promotion of human rights and global citizenship. Her aim is to be able to help to make Australia’s aid program stronger and more gender focused through steering and shaping the national agenda for international aid and diplomacy.

I met “melp” at a conference a year or so ago and she’s smart & engaging. Good on her!

Hmmm. I wonder if *she’s* the one who stole your cashmere jumper?!!? 😉

I would think not.

So, some people are excited that she’s going overseas to learn how to ‘pressure’ (aka “lobby”) the Commonwealth Government to hand over more taxpayer’s money to an US-founded private organisation (CARE Australia), so they can spend it on some possibly-not-so-well-thought-out aid schemes overseas?

Well done, that woman! Now come back when it’s finished, and don’t get poached.

This is the same Melanie Pool who wrote the less than well regarded report ‘Breaking The Ice’ three years ago. Has hopefully smartened up since then.

Love how you are quoting yourself here (without attribution) as the person who criticised the earlier report and still manage to get the title of the report wrong:

Good on her for the scholarship.

I like the deft way you highlight just how petty and baseless c_c’s comment was.

Good job Melanie Poole, it’s an achievement to be proud of.

Having not read the report in question, can you expand on why it wasn’t well regarded? e.g.:
a) poor spelling/grammar/layout etc
b) it said things people didn’t like hearing
c) it was poorly researched or
d) a combo of the above?
Just wondering! 🙂

Awesome! Well done!

How apt that the scholarship is called Fulbright and not Dimwitt or Dullard…

I dips me lid. That’s a great achievement, and I wish her well in her studies.
