Things are about to get a whole lot cooler in Dickson with the opening of Spilt Milk Gelato Bar today (23 November). The brand has taken the central tablelands region of Orange by storm since they opened a year ago by combining a fresh wholesome party-like atmosphere in their store with their handmade icy desserts.

Their popularity in Orange stems from their quality. They produce innovative seasonal flavours fresh every day onsite in a process they call ‘cow to cone’. Collaborating with local producers and farmers to source the best ingredients in the region all in a playful environment.

Spilt Milk Bar is a whole retail experience

It is a whole retail experience, music, lighting and of course great gelato.

Since launching they have created a gelato brand with a distinctly Australian flair while paying homage to the authentic Italian process. Using only natural ingredients, the Orange store recreates the nostalgia of the old Aussie Milk Bar but with big bold flavours and lively tunes pumping out of the speakers.

Flavours are always seasonal and use 100 per cent Australian ingredients.

Owner Andrew Hamilton describes the place as a nightclub for kids.

“It is a whole retail experience, with a lot of time and money invested in the music, lighting and, of course, the final product, the making of the gelato.”

After a year of successful trading in Orange, they felt it was time to expand.

“Some of my family live here and I have been visiting for over 30 years and I love the place, so we decided to expand and open a new store here,” Mr Hamilton said.

“We have chosen Dickson as it is quite an eclectic place. It is already a foodie hub but currently, there is nothing quite like what we do here. With lots of apartments and businesses and three great big schools at our doorstep, we are very excited to open and be part of the community.

“The Canberra shop will look almost identical to the Orange one, and the philosophy will be the same – every gelato will be made from scratch every day. We’ll be using as much local produce as we can from the Canberra region, and we’ll be doing collaborations with local industry.”

Rotating menu of flavours

Expect to see a weekly rotating menu of flavours.

Mr Hamilton said they are already teaming up with local businesses including Three Mills Bakery which produces brownies and honeycomb for their signature gelatos.

The Cape Street store will be opening their doors officially for the first time at 2:00 pm today (23 November). Expect to see a weekly rotating menu of flavours which for the first week will include pistachio, hazelnut and their signature Spilt Milk flavour, which is a plain milk gelato.
