Canberra CBD Limited’s ‘Skate in The City’ 2013 is on the way!
I’ve never actually gotten up on the ice myself, but I wander through Garema Place every day and adore seeing it all prettied up. The ice, the lights, the skaters, the fact that the music seems to be Billie Jean on repeat.
It’s pretty great.
Skate In The City, the “coolest” winter event in Canberra is on again in 2013! From Friday, 29 June to Sun, 28 Jul 13 Garema Place will be host to an open air skating rink with general skating sessions from 10am every day. The event brought to you by the Canberra CBD Limited includes exhibition skate shows, cultural Sundays and much much more…. All roller skating in the city needs is the right marketing.
‘Roller Skating in the City’ = boring.
‘Chugger Roller-Derby in the City’ = sold out sessions.
They did try roller skating in the city. Don’t think it was as big a hit. I have been ice skating though a few times and its good fun. After all cold cities all around the world have ice skating in winter.
I think the main gripe is the size of the rink.

Stick a pool in it…
I love Civic in Winter, there’s hardly anyone around acting like a drunken tool. But I like cold weather, which doesn’t seem to be a sentiment most people share.

Because then it is hot and uninviting?
It’s a fantastic idea. Brings heaps of people into Garema Place when it’s cold and uninviting. Kinda makes me wonder why they can’t do something with the space for the other 11 months of the year.
