The annual MIS Magazine Top 100 survey results have just been released and InTACT is currently ranked as the 25th largest IT organisation in the country (we’d be 16th if the schools environment was included). See the full list here.

The results are interesting though the ranking takes place based on the number of supported desktop devices – a more accurate measure would probably need to include a combination of the complexity of the technical environment, size of the customer base, the number of staff and the size of the IT budget as a ratio of whole organisation spend.

Cant wait for the helpdeak to lose it over the number of IT Sales cold calls they will get!

InTACT are generally a pack of bloody gimps.

Anyone else unfortunate enough to have tried ringing their no-bloody-helpdesk?

Check out that nice, highly secure IP telephone system of theirs, that had a bunch of major design errors (resulting in gaping security holes) exposed by a pair of CIT students a few months ago.

Open Source software is widely used in the US military, I don’t think there’s a security concern per se.

Some managers claim there are administrative advantages to a homogenous environment but personally I think there’s a lot to be said for specialisation and not having shared vulnerabilities.

I’m not suggesting that InTACT should abandon proprietary software entirely, I’m just suggesting that they should have more open mind when it comes to these things.

The federal government made a very good book about adopting open source sfotware and integrating it with existing systems, and I’m just suprised that the ACT Government seems to have missed it enitrely, despite the media coverage and the fact that the launch took place roughly a kilometre from the Legislative Assembly.

Open source would work quite well, excpet for the fact that InTACT has look after 50-60 ood sites, and a whole of government network. I am sure that there would be very little security implications in your thought would there?

At the risk of being berated by my bosses and ruining my promotion chances (of which there aren’t many I’m interested in anyway), InTACT might be one of the largest IT organisations in the country, but they are still a heap of ignorant lunatics promoting Microsoft products at every single opportunity. Of course, seeing as I work in IT Support in the “schools environment” I might be looking at the wrong agency, but then again perhaps the entire ACT Government missed the federal goverment publication about using open source software in government that had a bit of media coverage around april, A Guide To Open Source Software For Australian Government Agencies. http://www.sourceit.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/42065/A_Guide_to_Open_Source_Software.pdf
