izumi bul go gi

Izumi on Marcus Clarke Street sells itself as a Japanese cafe, but looks a lot more Korean when you get onto the menu.

Today, having discovered a lack of cheap lunches on Childers Street (Hello? Student market?) I ordered the large Bul Go Gi set, which goes for $9.90 from Izumi.

The joint was really jumping when I popped in, lots of people getting lunch just after 12.

The tempura was a touch on the soggy side, but the Bul Go Gi (marinated, grilled beef strips) was delicious.

The fermented mung beans worked nicely to even out the flavours, the rice was sticky enough to eat with chopsticks.

Value for money these japanese/korean lunchboxes are just head and shoulders above anything being offered by the other eateries of Canberra and Izumi’s a worthy addition to the list.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

japanese? why go anywhere but tasuke?

Their Bibimbap is the best I have ever tasted and its been consistently good from both Izumi and Cocorea for years. Great value for lunch.

Agreed. I used to go to both Izumi’s. Didn’t realise the one in Garema had even changed it’s name till I was meeting someone there. Large chicken combo FTW.

The Fried Chicken Combo and Bi Bim Bap at Izumi is the biz though I think the BBB is just above $10.
I suggest a dash of the chilli sauce on your dish as well.

It is a shame about the soggy Tempura but precooking it probably speeds up the serving process and it can get pretty crazy there at lunch.

Cocorea in the city do the same meals as Izumi… even used to be called Izumi. It’s just as good, the large bulgogi is my staple lunch from there 🙂

Funny how the korean restaurant and the japanese one can share the same menu isn’t it? Also Izumi’s trade is mostly anglo where Corcorea the clientelle is mostly asian.
