So much for anonymity! 😉 If it helps the penny to drop, I finished year 10 in 1989, lived in Scullin and went to Ginninderra College briefly in 1990. Left college after about 3 months and got a job instead.

Not a lot. I think she was friends with my brother before me. I don’t really recall any of her other friends. If I still had my year books I’m sure I could pick out some faces, but they all went missing in a house move.

the worst i have ever seen was a guy thrown into one of the windows at the bin. we grabbed him pretty quickly, but he almost landed his neck on a big jagged edge *shudder*, we bundled him off to the hospital. The cops at the time couldn’t believe how lucky he was…

I’m another Charnwood to Kambah refugee (St Thomas Aquinas 1978-79, for the record). Having spent 23 years in Charnwood and the past four in Kambah, I think the worst thing I’ve seen in either suburb was a bunch of drunk guys outside the Kambah Inn one Saturday afternoon trying to bludge smokes off passersby.

Ahhhh, Charny Pub wasn’t so bad…. at least not when I was there (early to mid 90’s). Used to go there frequently. Actually, I met my husband there! Hubby’s band played there a few times and they never had any trouble from the crowd. We never saw anything happen there that we haven’t seen in many other pubs and clubs around Canberra. Jim and Helen, the proprietors, were lovely people who looked after their regulars very well. Our winnings from the meat raffles always kept us well fed too. 🙂

I agree about Charnwood as an area, mostly a good area although I do know a few folk who had been robbed – mainly those that live on the bike path that makes its way around through the suburb. I lived in Flynn for over 20 yrs and my folks still live there now (33 yrs and counting). As a kid I used to go mushrooming on Mt Rogers under what is now ‘upper’ Flynn. You’re experience of Charny shops is obviously different from mine, I’ve seen quite a few fights there between ‘adults’over the years. As I said in an earlier post I think most of the problems come from folk who drink more than they can handle at the tavern (once formally known as the ‘Charnwood Family Tavern’)and move between there and the TAB.

Bernie Flats – won an architectural award then was raized to the ground 20 yrs later. Not a nice place.

Did you go to Charnwood Primary or St Thomas A.?

what about fraser tavern, or charny tavern? they were the hotbeds for the underhanded deals, keg thefts, hot property sales, etc, etc. ( I distinctly remember seeing a couple of kids rolling a keg across fraser oval)

charnwood upper was pretty clean, as was sections of lower charnwood. I think the hintons came from kaleen, they were pretty rough guys, but not much of a problem if you remembered to be polite to them. They spent a bit of time in flynn, melba etc.

the shops weren’t a problem, it was the influx into these suburbs by act housing after Melba flats were torn down.

remember melba flats, bernie court etc?? they were sites of extremely bad people….

and others trying to get by, day by day.

Down the woolshed end. The forensics are still there…

actually, considering I came from charnwood, apart from the hoons, this is probably the quietest area I have even lived in. I can hear the noise from the tavern some nights, but that is still pretty muffled and ok for me.

Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve heard of people running around in the early hours of Kambah in this way. I know its almost cliche, but there is a lot of ice in that suburb and surrounding areas.

I would speculate a home invasion at that time, in that suburb, on ‘people known to the police’ would be drug related and likely ice.

Well I don’t know if it’s quite worth doing that but I wouldn’t move there to begin with

Kambah’s a funny suburb like that: rampant opulence meets seven and a half cars on the front lawn and an old boat full of empty cans.
