Kate Carnell moves on to beyondblue

By johnboy - 23 January 2012 17

Beyondblue has announced they’ve taken on former Chief Minister of the ACT Kate Carnell as their Chief Executive Officer:

Chairman Jeff Kennett said rarely can a community, not-for-profit organisation attract to its leadership position a person of such outstanding qualifications as Ms Carnell.

Ms Carnell is a highly-respected person, having been Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory for six years, and the Minister for Health in the ACT for three years.

Ms Carnell has a long-term interest in the policy and delivery issues surrounding mental health, and brings all that experience and enthusiasm to beyondblue.

More recently, Ms Carnell has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Australian General Practice Network, and up until this appointment, has been CEO of the Australian Food and Grocery Council.

Ms Carnell has been a Director of beyondblue since 2008 and Deputy Chair since 2010. She was also involved in the establishment of Headspace.

Mr Kennett said: “Ms Carnell will continue as a Director of beyondblue because of her position as CEO. She knows the organisation, its staff and partners extremely well, and is clearly an experienced CEO who will work with the Board and staff in continuing beyondblue’s exceptional work throughout the community.

Hey Kate i’m feeling all depressed because i was at a winery all day for a function and then rolled my vehicle on the drive home.

Maybe by avoiding all responsibility and getting away clean could perk me up eh?

So the champion of junk food and cigarettes has joined “the happy team”.

Who’s next? Nick Minchin? Godwin Gretch?

You mean having Kennett as a long-term chairman hadn’t already made that clear?!

Point taken.

I’m amazed that someone who was ‘ACT Health minister for three years’ could then go onto AFGC and fight against any attempts to reduce junk food ads, improve consumer education regarding food composition, or improve food quality in general.
How did she do it with a straight face? She must have no conscience at all…..!

There are so many syntax issues with this press release.

“Chairman Jeff Kennett said rarely …. ” ouch!

well, more punctuation than syntax – it should have [of??! /piss take] been edited to ‘said, ‘Rarely…’ but the point is taken – sadly as grammatical as many press releases these days. sigh.

Anyone know what happened to Leonie Young? I’m still quite surprised at the news and can’t find any mention of Young’s leaving on Google.

She left in Nov 2010 after her 7 year contract to persue other positions. She was replaced by Dawn O’Neil who left after 7 months due to clashes with Jeff Kennett over his views on the GLBTI community. Kate has replaced Dawn.

beyondblue has always been regarded as the Rolls Royce of mental health services. On the other hand, the ACT Mental Health Service is regarded as a broken down, clapped out Lada Niva.

Interesting news indeed. I wonder what happened to the last CEO? She had a pretty high profile.

beyondblue has become quite a heavy-hitter in the mental health world, driving a lot of the developments in the treatment of high-prevalance mental health conditions, and being very much behind a lot of the mental health training that is delivered to GPs.
